Another early morning start, mainly to beat the heat, and the crowds, Gill, Sandra, Katie and I, joined by our Sri Lankan family set off for the day. Our first stop, Sigiriya, which is the best preserved city centre in Asia from the first millennium, with all its buildings and gardens with their trees, paths and water gardens. Actually climbing to the top of this rock was so rewarding. When I saw how many steps I had to climb, I thought oh no, not a chance, but once you get going it does get easier, and to actually reach the top was fantastic, the views were spectacular. The worst part was having to climb a metal spiral staircase to have a look into some caves which the most spectacular wall paintings. The whole thing consists of ... read more

March 10, 2008 Mt. Lavinia, Sri Lanka Today was another day on the road back to Mt. Lavinia, on the ocean, south of Colombo, with a stop at a very important Buddhist Temple and a very large golden colored statue of Buddha. We continued to work our way back to Colombo with a nice drive through the county side and small towns and villages. One short stop was made at Sigiriya to check out a very large rock outcropping that was the home to a fortress, on top, that was built by a ruler of the time to house his palace. This looked like a very complicated and difficult climb so we elected to take some photos and pass on the climb to the top. ( Mostly because we were too lazy to try ) This ... read more

Sigiriya Rock Fortress - Is it a world Wonder?? My wife & I just got back from a hike to undisputedly one of the World's Greatest Wonders - The Sigiriya Rock Fortress , in Sigiriya Sri Lanka. Although I had the priveledge to climb the fortress when I was small, I couldn't recall it clearly and we didn't have a guide back then. We started our climb very early @8am on 28-Sep (Fri) morning with a Guide who we met at the bottom of the rock. It was a great day for hike with cool breeze & not much Sun. First thing we saw was the royal garden by the foot of the rock, which held us breathless. It was filled with some amazing architectural wonders that you wouldn't believe was possible 1000 years ago. ... read more

Yesterday on the drive to Kandy we stopped in Pinnawela to visit the elephant orphanage. Deb and I went there 13 years ago when it was just an open field and a coffee can asking for donations. Now they have a visitors center, sit down restaurant, tons fo souvenir shops and a stinking hotel--A Hotel!!--just to look at the baby elephants. They also have a $10 admission charge. These Sri Lankans know a commercial opportunity when they see one. We stayed for about two hours and saw a feeding and the march to the river for a bath. Today we did a three-hour drive to the north to see the ancient city on top of Sigiriya. It's a huge rock the juts 200 meters straight out of the dirt. The ruins were quite impressive. At ... read more

So now for my weekend away. Well what can I say except WOW, I never realised how beautiful and historical Sri Lanka was. As I said before we went to visit some of the sights on the Cultural Triangle, we left Friday afternoon and drove for about 5 hours on the worst roads in history until we reached our overnight stop, a really nice little hotel with lovely food and no bugsā€¦.. The drivers out here are awful; they seem to think that the line down the centre of the road is a third lane which makes for some pretty hair raising overtaking I can tell you. Before it got dark we drove through the Appura Jungle (not sure of spelling) and saw elephants walking along the road, in Sri Lanka farmers use them to carry ... read more

... and the monkey won! It all began with the purchase of some precut pineapple as we descended from the rock temple at Dambulla. The cheeky little monkey in question also had its sights set on the pineapple and a challenge arose between the monkey and Suz ... The monkey blocked our path and gestured at the pineapple, Suz tried the trick tactic of throwing a bit of pineapple away from the path in the hope that the monkey would take the bait, following the pineapple away from the path allowing safe passage. But the monkey had seen this trick before and his sights stayed firmly fixed on the remaining pineapple clutched firmly in Suz's hand. Not to be deterred Suz lunged at the monkey to shoo it away but the monkey bared his teeth and ... read more

... read more
