After an early breakfast, we left our bungalow in the jungle for the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa. It took about an hour to drive to the site. Polonnaruwa was the second capital city of Sri Lanka after the first capital city was destroyed during the 6th century. On the way, we encountered a water monitor lizard along side of the road. We were able to get within a few feet of the creature. Then on the way home, we saw our first elephant herd walking along the road. We were very excited about the find but our driver was freaked out thinking the elephants might attack and sped away.... read more

Dear Family and Friends, Hope all is well with everyone. We are having a great time checking out the sights of Sri Lanka. The weather has been hot and muggy with the odd bit of rain. Saw our first elephants today walking along side the road/highway. Was very exciting! I finally figured out how to post the blog entries so everyone can view them, so if you please, there are three other blogs from this trip posted previously you can read. Take care. Love to all. Today was an early start and off we went to Sigiriya (Lion Rock). I'd read a bit about this landmark before we went, but, hadn't realised quite how big it actually is. It seems to pop up out of nowhere as it's surrounded by trees and we couldn't see it until we were pretty much there and it's immense. Sigiriya is a medieval site and once housed the palace of King Kassapa, the aim of the morning was to get to the top to check out the view and walk round the ruins, frescos and monuments on the way up. To get from the bottom to the top there are just over 1200 steps to climb... Given the humidity this morning it was a 50/50 chance I'd get up there!! But I made it after a ... read more

19th Feb - Today we went to Polonnaruwa where there were temples and monuments. We saw a Royal Palace, which was more than 800 years old. We cycled round all the temples and monuments, which took about 3-hours. It was a huge place and I saw lots of statues of Buddha. You weren't allowed to put your back to any of the statues of the Buddha, and you had to take your shoes off before you went into the temple. Also there were lots of monkeys. We saw one eating an ice-cream! At our guest house there was a frog in the shower and a big spider on the ceiling! Then we went for a walk and a lady invited us into her garden. She was really friendly, and said that the elephants came into her ... read more

19th Feb - Pollonaruwa part of the Cultural Triangle. Today we went to a museum to see lots of statues of the person Buddha. There were lots of beautiful beads. Then we went to some Buddhist houses and palaces. The homes had lots of statutes of the Buddha around them. The statues were hundreds of years old. If you went inside you had to take your shoes and hat off to be respectful. If you wanted you could have a blessing and have some paint blobbed on your forehead (at Hindu temple also at same site). At night, when I went into the bathroom there was a frog behind the sink and massive spider on the wall. Jonathan Additions from Sophie - The Royal Palace is more than 800-years old. 18th Feb - Today we went to Sigiriya with a man called Anil. On the way we went to a spice garden and saw lots of new things like vanilla pods, cacao beans, cloves, pepper, baby pineapples and ginger. I have never seen an orange tree before. Jonathan and I had a leg massage. Then we went to our guesthouse. It was so hot we went swimming. Then some bad news came (from the parents) as we had to climb Sigiriya Rock, which used to have a Buddhist Monastery on top. Sophie... read more

We spent 2 nights at the Lion Rock Guest House – close to Lion Rock and just a little way out of Sigiriya. Another surprising little guest house in the middle of nowhere – only 8 rooms – each building was painted aqua green with white trim and our room was painted lime green and the bathroom was peachy/orange….but the only thing I really wanted when I arrived there was to peel myself out of my clinging wet clothes and get into a nice hot shower….which we did and then followed that up with a nice cold beer. It was still raining heavily and we were getting a bit concerned about climbing up Lion Rock – this is the place that I really wanted to see on this trip and I was a little worried….but…thank goodness ... read more

Sigiriya Rock Citadel is a world heritage listed site in central Sri Lanka. The imposing rock structure is surrounded by a crocodile infested moat, and the ruins and artwork at the summit of the rock date back to the 5th Century AD. There are 1600 steps to tackle in the hour long climb to the summit, in a part of Sri Lanka that is fiercely hot. There is the added concern of giant wasps that are ready to attack if disturbed by tourists. However, the views of the ruins and the surrounding countryside from the summit are absolutely magic, and rank amongst the premier tourist experiences I've been privileged to enjoy. Day trips to Sigiriya can be organised out of Kandy, itself a beautiful city on a lake, and the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. But ... read more

There aren't enough superlatives to describe Sigiriya. So let's not try to repeat what every guide book has said at one time or another. It is a "must see" sight ... Because it a good hike up, has some breathtaking views from the top, has some interesting history, and new things are still being found out about Sigiriya. For example, the "Cobra Hood" entrance and cave was a recent "discovery" by some visiting archaeologists. People had walked by that "entrance" for eons, but didn't know it's significance till recently. The remaining frescoes that are thought to have adorned the inside and outside of the rock are in fairly good condition, and people are respecting the "no flash" and "no touching" rules. Same for the "mirror wall" where you can read 1500 year old graffiti. We climbed ... read more
