20th Feb - Today we went in the van to look for elephants in the wild. They were so hard to find because there were so many trees for them to hide behind. In the end we saw one. After we went to some cave temples that had lots of Buddhas. When we went down the steps there were Buddhist monks and some ladies handing out fruit. At the bottom we saw a baby monitor lizard and if we catch one we get 400 Rupees (parental challenge!). After we went to some diamond mines where we saw people shaping the precious stones. Then we went into the shop where I saw an elephant made with jewels and it cost $55,000 (a lot). Then we went to a huge market where there were truck loads of food and there was so much work. It was spectacular because there were caves with statues of Buddha praying, teaching, sleeping and meditating. On the ceiling of the caves there were painting of elephants and flowers. Walking around were Buddhists wearing no shoes and orange robes. It was very quiet and peaceful. Sophie
.... parental advice and obs, Jonathan, when visiting Monasteries wear
a more appropriate t-shirt in the future.
It was a wholesale market, and clearly a place not used to having camera touting tourists in it's midst.
