Wednesday, 16th October 2019 I followed Ktourstory for my Jeju West Coast Day Tour and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I was the only participant this morning. Together with my driver Henry and his friend, this was an exclusive tour experience for me. Henry who picked me up at my hotel was punctual in the morning. A native from Busan, he spoke good Mandarin as he studied Chinese for a couple of years in the University. After graduation, he decided to move to Jeju to pursue his tour guiding career. The drive to the various scenic spots on Jeju Island - the Hyeopjae Beach, Geumneung Stone Park, Sanbanggulsa Temple, Songaksan Mountain and the O'sulloc Tea Museum was smooth. Henry explained the places with great detail but he also gave me ample time to explore the ... read more

Tuesday, 15th October 2019 Since I had no intention to do a self-drive adventure in Jeju, I decided to follow one of the daily tours which would bring me to various scenic spots on the island. First up for today is the Eastern Jeju Discovery Program organised by Yeha Tour. The tour was easily arranged online a few days prior to my arrival in Korea. One of the highlights of the tour must be the horse riding experience in the morning. This was my first time on a horse back and easily one of the most memorable moments for me in Jeju (and probably in my life). The skies started to drizzle as we proceeded to our next stop, the Seongeup Folk Village where I learnt a great deal about traditional Jeju architecture including the rock ... read more

Monday, 14th October 2019 I took an early flight out from Busan for my 4 days 3 nights excursion to Jeju Island. Given the regular flight service between the two destinations, it did not come as a surprise that the fares for the one hour journey were very reasonably priced. My Asiana flight landed at Jeju Airport sometime after 8.30am this morning. Finding my way around the Arrivals for the public buses to my hotel in old Jeju Town proved to be relatively straight forward with the handy Naver App. I soon boarded a bus which would drop me at Gwandeokjeong Pavilion where the Staz Hotel Jeju Robero that I would be staying was right across the bus stand. The whole commute took less than 20 minutes. The thing that I really liked about my hotel ... read more

Sunday, 13th October 2019 After breakfast at Toyoko Inn this morning, I embarked on a half day East Busan Exploration Tour with Klook to bring me to places that were not easily accessible via the Busan Metro. Our tour group today was small comprising of two ladies from Malaysia and another three visitors from South Africa. From the pick-up point at Busan Station, the six of us proceeded straight to the Oryukdo Skywalk, one of the many cantilever glass bottom skywalks scattered along the rugged coast of Busan. It was extremely windy when we arrived so we should count ourselves really lucky that the attraction had remained opened despite the bad weather. After spending about 30 minutes at the Skywalk, our mini-bus proceeded further along the coast to the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple. This is a very ... read more

Sunday, 13th October 2019 So the bus dropped me off at Haeundae Beach after the tour where I headed straight to one of the restaurants serving the Busan pork rice soup. It was easy to fall in love with this dish given how light in taste the soup was. With generous portion of pork slices and tasty appetisers, it made a really fulfilling meal option for me especially after a long day out since early morning. After lunch, I walked around the beach area for a while and was really amazed by the number of skyscrapers dotting the main street. It was a warm October afternoon perfect for an ideal time at the beach. Determined to score a memorable sunset view, I made an impromptu decision to head to Dadaepo Beach, some 37 stations away on ... read more

Saturday, 12th October 2019 There are a couple of options to get to downtown Busan from Gimhae International Airport. One convenient way is via the airport buses that run straight to the Busan Station where my hotel is located. Another slightly cheaper and longer route is via the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit which connects to the Busan Metro at the popular Seomyeon Station. Since I had arrived really early and had plenty of time to burn before the hotel standard check-in timing, I decided to opt for the latter. After an udon breakfast at Mido Fishcake, I was soon making my way out of the terminal building to the Gimhae Transit Station. Along the way, I dropped by at the airport information centre and helped myself with a copy of the tourist map of Busan. The ... read more

Saturday, 12th October 2019 I decided to have an early lunch before proceeding with my sight-seeing plans. A few blocks from Toyoko Inn lies Jejuga Korean Restaurant, a cosy little spot serving wholesome abalone porridge. It seemed rather popular among the local people so I guess this must be a legit place. Very often, the flavourful Korean appetisers also took centre stage in a meal. Having them together with the mains certainly helped to enhance the whole culinary experience. Feeling wonderful from my satisfying lunch, I was soon on my way to the UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea. The Cemetery occupies a sprawling site in the heart of Busan and it honours the soldiers from the 16 UN countries who were killed during the Korean War between 1950 - 1953. I first made my way to ... read more

Friday, 11th October 2019 Silkair $398 launch fares between Singapore and Busan caught my attention while doing my travel research in early 2019. The offer was simply "too-good-to-be-missed". With a good-price motivation factor, I booked my tickets for another trip to South Korea after a hiatus of 9 years. My impression of Korea was rather neutral prior to this trip having spent some 6 days in Seoul in April 2010. Things had changed for the better in October 2019. While I still don't comprehend the Korean language, the avail of modern technology like Wifi, Naver Map as well as day tours from Klook meant that I was definitely much prepared for this trip compared to my maiden attempt. And with some luck, I might be able to witness the autumn foliage towards the end of my ... read more

And we're back!!! And this time, with the whole family. Quite a challenge to manage our folks because of their age...but then again, it was not that bad as expected. Actually, it was a very good experience, and very good it was. We arrived late because of the delays (What's new?), but spirits are still up. Unfortunately, public transport is no more so we need to take private cars. We spoke to one and agreed with the price and went off to the parking lot only to find that he drives a pick up.... and we are 8!!! Funny is that the driver insisted to put us all in to which I objected...then a misunderstanding broke. On one side is a Korean guy speaking in Korea, and on the other a Filipino guy talking in English..... ... read more

The Gwanjung markets is an undercover clothes by day/food by night market. The Netflix series ‘street food', the Seoul episode, focused on this market and one proprietor in particular. We had a snack of kimchi + meat dumplings there, washed down with a cold Cass beer, before heading off to another stall to have Toppoki (rice cakes with chilli pepper sauce) and Gimbap, a Korean type of nori roll filled with beatle leaf, rice and vegetables. While we were eating, we noticed photos of British chef Gordon Ramsay , and as we left, the owner insisted on feeding us more gimbap like she did to Gordon! Afterward, we stopped by a really nice craft brew pub near our hotel which was blasting K pop videos! The next day, we headed off early to wander around the ... read more
