This week went off without a hitch. It definitely flew by. Monday I went to Tonya's apartment to watch the tragic loss of the Vikings. They had so many opportunities to win that game but it seems fate is always against them. I hope Brett comes back next year, a field general is exactly what the team needs since Childress is incompetent when it comes to calling plays. Wednesday I went to the weekly poker game at Liz and Jim's house. They cooked me some duck which I wrapped in lettuce leaves with mushrooms, onions, this red soy-based sauce and some garlic...delicious. Andrew, JT, Jemal, Yogita and I had been playing poker almost daily at the hogwan. That was put to a stop on Friday by Mrs. Chae when she blew up at JT in all Korean, I had no idea what she was saying but basically it means no more gambling at work. I took my students from the 3:00 pm class out to lunch on Friday as well since that class will be over as of Wednesday. I'll miss one student in particular, her English name is Ashley...she's really interested in American culture and is motivated to learn English.
She even watches Heroes and Gossip Girl! I tried to get her into my 6pm adult class but it didn't work with her schedule.
Friday night Andrew and I had some beers and some good conversation. He taught me a new card game kind of like Presidents and Assholes which is pretty fun. We went and had some chicken and called it an early night...
That's because the next day we went to Muju!! This is the largest ski resort in Korea. I had originally not intended to ski because the internet said they didn't have my size boots. I went with JT, Yogita, Jemal and Andrew. Jemal and Yogita and I had originally planned to sled instead and maybe go to the spa but it didn't play out that way. When we got there I tried on the rental shop's biggest boots just for kick and to my surprise they fit! I was pretty stoked. Jemal and Yogita were feeling terrible and hungover from their late evening on Friday (a poor decision on their part). They decided to bail and drive the 2 hours back to Gunsan as soon as they got to Muju. This left Andrew,
JT and I to ski/snowboard. It was pretty cheap, all the rental gear plus buying a pair of gloves, plus a 4 hour lift pass was only 56,000 won.
The resort was super busy. We waited a long time in a lot of the lift lines. I was really rusty since I hadn't been skiing since 8th grade but I thought I picked it back up quickly when I flew down the bunny hill. After the next run I realized I wasn't fully in control as I barreled down the hill. I did my best to go down slowly but it was tough. There was an express ski-only lift that had no line. I went on this without Andrew and JT and it proved to be a mistake. Even though I saved time the two runs it led two were extremely steep. I got about halfway down before wiping out. It was pretty bad, I lost both skis, poles and my hat. I landed on my back and slid for about 3 meters. I felt okay except I did something to my right shoulder. It hurts a lot to lift anything or lean on it now but I don't
think I broke anything, maybe just pulled it.
After our time playing on the slopes JT was against going to see the spa which was a bummer because I would have liked to...but he was driving. We stopped in Jeonju (a city 40 minutes south of Gunsan with about twice its population) on the way home and ate at TGI Friday's. I had a burger which was very good and got a margarita, also tasty. It's a more expensive restaurant over here with smaller portions, my meal was about 24,000 won. Afterwards we poked around at Lotte Department store which is a huge mall-like complex. Like Lotte Mart on steroids. We also visited the video arcade there which was fun. Everything is cheaper, only 300-500 won per game which equates to between 25 and 50 cents. I was really sore this morning but it was all worth it, Muju was really fun!

My bar?
What's it say, Eric - Kevin's bar? Too fuzzy to make out in the pic. Thanks for the honor, though! Glad you had fun skiing and hope your shoulder is ok. Too bad I wasn't there to show you how it's done ;-) Twenty-four bucks for TGIF for a drink and burger doesn't sound all that high to me. I bet it was worth it. I bought some teriyaki jerky today - wish you had some? I could send a care package if I knew what you wanted and had an address. Bummer about the Vikings but they gave it away. Reminded me of the OT loss to Atlanta 10 years ago. They still haven't been to the SB since 1977 (and I was there). Oh well... baseball starts soon! Keep posting, it's fun to read! Love, Dad
