1st Jun: Up far too early. 5 am! I managed to leave the house not long after half past and headed to the metro. Got to Suwon station, not long after six. Bought some breakfast from the shop, and sat eating that, while waiting for my train. My train left about ten past seven. I put my ear phones in and tried to sleep. The bloke next to me was a bit chatty, and I was in no mood for it. It was too early. The train journey took about three hours. I almost missed my stop as I was asleep. However the old bloke told me, it was my stop. Thank goodness! The train station in Jeonju is gorgeous, it's built in the hanok style. After asking at the tourist information office about how to ... read more

Travelling light is a thing of the past! Gone are the days of only having a backpack and day-pack each. (Hopefully not gone for good, they can return when the kids are bigger!) We are still “backpacking” with a backpack and day-pack each, plus a small holdall for the girls clothes and the Macpac possum child carrier which Colin uses to carry Samara. She has her own day-pack but we try to put it in one of our bags when travelling. It doesn't help that we are carrying a travel cot for Katrina. Its a great small one (small relative to other porta cots!), a LittleLife Arc2.Even with all our baggage, we are still stopping in several places during our two weeks in Korea. If you don't count an over night stay at an Incheon Airport ... read more

I'll try and get some photo's up this weekend. At the moment they're uploaded on my Facebook Page. When we went to leave Langkawi we found out that we still had an extra day. We packed our bags, did the last minute things we wanted to such as parasailing, eating fantastic food, swimming in the ocean, watchinghte sunsets and made peace with the fact that our vacation was over. The morning we intended to check out the desk clerk informed us that we didn't check out until the next day. Great, I thought, I've reserved the room an extra night and we'll have to pay for it even though we'll be on a flight to Seoul in a few hours. I went and double checked my booking and much to my surprise saw that our hotel ... read more

This is starting to get rather behind and so is going to have to get possibly rather shorter rather than a ramble on (some of you may cheer!). Anyway I am actually now in Mokpo but must rewind back to Daejeon beach (sorry if the spelling may have been inconsistent with a "j"-"ch" there maybe in that name). Having checked out the hourly train times with my temporary American friends yesterday while I was at the station got a taxi there for the 1 PM train which went to Iksan, then a 20 minute changeover time to get a chugger to Jeonju which is not on the fast KTX line to Yeosu, which is where the Expo 2012 is - will get there later, having been to the Nagoya one in Japan in 2010 (simply because ... read more

Hey everyone, Eddie here again, its been a few days since the first blog entry so I'll quickly recap what's been going on since then. After we arrived at our orientation and were situated in our dorms we began attending some lectures about life in Korea and its education system. For the most part they have been interesting and informative, but I won't go into the details. We were pretty busy with lectures on Friday and Saturday (our time), but today (Sunday) we got to go on a field trip! Our field trip began with a trip to the small village in the Jeonju area called Hanok. Hanok is known for its rich Korean history and world renown food, such as Bibimbop. When we arrived in Hanok we learned about Koreas paper. Koreans have been making ... read more

Eddie here, I've managed to get our computer working in the dormitory here at Jeonju University and this the Frederick's first blog entry! Stacey is asleep behind me, we are still tired from our grueling, long trip yesterday (and the day before since we technically lost a day). We made it to Korea fine, the flight was surprisingly pleasant for an 11 hour journey in economy, the service staff on Korean Air was excellent and the one other person sharing our seat row was polite and quiet. After arriving in Seoul we hopped on a bus and made another 4 hour drive down to Jeonju, the capitol of the Jeollabuk-do, the north Jeolla Province. We will be staying at the University here for the next several days for an orientation and will then head to Busan, ... read more

As far as weeks go in Korea, this one was my toughest. I was starting to feel that my wander lust had completely worn out and that I should head home. After a "Western" breakfast burrito, a friend and I headed out for our now daily walk around town. We decided to take a new road which ended at a bridge construction site. After a few seconds of deliberation, we crossed the barriers and walked down the closed road. It lead to a place which seemed very un-Jeonju like. A small creek rushed through the neighborhood which made for a tranquil setting. Little concrete bridges created a path over the creek to the homes of a few lucky Jeonju residents. Even the dog looked content to just listen to the water rush by! On our journey ... read more
