I am back. Back to Korea that is. I am about to begin my new job, in my new neighborhood, with a new outlook on the experience past and ahead. As most of you know, I took an extended break from the 9-5, although my previous job was not 9-5. I guess what I wanted was a break from Korea and to come home to Portland to see the people I missed while I was away. I arrived about a month ago in and have been waiting to start my new Job in Ilsan. Ilsan is an area of Korea just north of Seoul, and just south of the DMZ (around 25 miles). I am staying with my girlfriend Michelle at the moment while I await starting my new position and finding a place of my ... read more

To tell the truth to the world at large... the walls surrounding our Australian dreams crumbled over the weekend of January 10th. Unexplainable things happened during a class and the school we taught at backed the student rather than (me) the teacher. Even the co-teacher agreed with what had happened throughout the class. It didn't make any sense. Then things changed... I was no longer a teacher in South Korea. We had worked long and hard to get to this place so we could journey into the South Pacific further once we were through a 12-month contract. But what happened, happened. We cannot change those things. Honestly, I did what I needed to at that moment. I wouldn't change what I did. There was no reason to. I made a decision based upon the situation at ... read more

After the weekend of touch rugby we received an email from Rick in personnel about an opportunity to attend the G-Design Festival at the Kintex Convention Center nearby in Ilsan. As EV teachers and administrators we would receive "free tickets" to the festival because we are a government subsidized company. After reading through the email, I told Shauna we should do it, if we could return in time for our 1:00pm shift? Shauna agreed to the G-Design Festival, if we were back on campus in time to work. By the end of the day we had signed up for the trip to Ilsan the following Monday for the G-Design Festival. There was a small group of people attending from the ODP (One Day Program) and several administrators. Only Shauna and myself came along with from the ... read more

We'd been at the village less than fourteen days when we heard rumors about a Costco in Ilsan and how wonderful it was because they stocked brands we would know, they had cheese and other assorted foods foreigners couldn't find elsewhere. The problem with Costco as everyone knows is you must be a member. Our mission was to find someone with a Costco card willing to go with us so we could explore the possibilities? On Tuesday we started our search for a Costco member by inquiring to other teacher's during our development time inside the teacher's workroom. During our search for someone with a membership card, Andrea explained that we only needed to borrow a card because we all looked the same! With this information rattling around in my head, I thought she was screwing ... read more

So it has been ages since I've added anything to my blog, and unlike previous entries I'm not going to attempt to sum everything up for you. This is partly because I can't possibly remember it all, but mainly because I just can't be bothered. Instead I'll try and highlight some of the more memorable experiences and let my photos do the talking. For all my friends who might be reading, I don't have any wild and crazy drunk experiences for you because I've been surprisingly tame these past few months. It's lame I know...I promise I'll do better for my next entry. Over the Children's Day holiday my gangsta ass bitch Jess and I headed East to Sokcho and Seoraksan National Park for a extended weekend of camping, hiking, and lounging on the beach. One ... read more

AHHHHHHHHHGGGRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (she screams in silent anger as she sits in her chair afraid to actually open her mouth for fear that it may induce further pain) Here is another poem I wrote for today's feelings and adventures. The reason for this one is that I just got back from the Dentist. Never a great thing in any day. I went with the idea that I had a cavity to have fixed, but instead he told me there was none! BUT, that instead, the pain and sensitivity that I have been feeling on my one tooth, is actually coming from the tooth beside it and I will probably have to have yet another root canal to fix the problem. You see this tooth in question, years ago, had a cavity, it got fixed by being filled with ... read more

Ok, so the pictures are coming, I swear! But when you have over 1000 pictures, it takes a LONG time to get them all figured out. Soon, very soon. In the mean time, I have been doing a lot of thinking about what will be next in my life of adventures, for no matter where I am, it is an adventure! So my most recent thoughts have been looking into the world of communication. No, nothing to do with Media, but instead looking at the very basics of all humanity, the art form that is communicating. I have always been interested in Sociology and I even took it as a sort of unofficial Minor in University along side of my Music degree. After completing my year of Teacher's College, I became even more aware of "good" ... read more

Today I awoke to my alarm. An alarm with the purpose of awaking me for the morning job of taking my temperature. Today I am in quarantine. A quarantine that started 5 nights and 4 days ago. Today my voice is starting to return. I long to sing again. Today the sun is shinning, but I must stay inside. I must stay inside because I am in quarantine. I am not sick. Today I enjoyed 2 short intervals of human interaction beyond the walls of my apartment. I had to get food. The time was short but the walk was slow. Today I made someone laugh. In turn, also making me laugh. Today I said goodbye to 2 friends. Colleagues turn friends. Friends turn Art collaborators. Today I cried. Elisa (Ashley and Alicia - you will ... read more

It's been so long since my last post I honestly have no idea about time or dates of any events, but once again, I'll do my best... As always I've stayed pretty busy on the weekends, getting out and seeing as much as I can. One of my roommates from grad school hooked me up with a friend she has in Korea and together we checked out Gyeongbok Palace. Despite the phony tourist bullshit, this place was really cool. It was originally constructed in 1394 and was the main and largest palace of the Joseon Dynasty. I've also made every attempt possible to get outside of Seoul as well. My favorite means of escape? Hiking. Korea has so many beautiful mountains and they are flooded with people on the weekends looking to get their hike ... read more
