For today we had planned to go to Chuncheon, the city our friend Minjeong is from (who I study with) and meet her family. We had to leave the house pretty early and even though Astrid was up earlier than be she still ended up being the last one ready to leave. We missed our train (although to be fair we had bad luck with our metro connections, so we would have probably missed it anyways) and had to hang around the train station for an hour before we could take the next one. To kill some time we went to a cafe and had some drinks. At 10 am our trip finally started and around an hour later we met with Minjeong. She picked us up together with her mom, who was just the cutest lady on earth. She was very excited to meet her daughter’s friends and showed off her couple of words she could say in German. Before going to their home, we made a short stop at a Japchae market and then went over to Minjeong’s place where her grandmother was already preparing lunch.
Furthermore her cousin greeted us and their little dog who wouldn’t stop
barking. The food was absolutely incredible and Minjeong told us this is not something they would usually eat, but they wanted to prepare something special for us. The food we were served was more for a festive occasion like Christmas.
After eating and some tea Minjeong’s mom drove us to the Nami island where she bought us tickets for the ferry before suddenly leaving. She had to work and had only gotten some time off to drive us around. Once we got to the little island we walked around it for a while. It was a strange place, the ticket for the ferry was marked as an “entry visa” for the “Naminara Republic”, but it was all more of a joke. We rented tandem bikes to explore the island a little more and I got to ride one with Minjeong’s cousin. She didn’t speak any English, but we somehow managed to coordinate our moves quite well until we reached a little hill. I wanted to change the gears and must have somehow broken the bike… We had to wait for someone from the rental place to come with an extra bike to switch them and after around 30 minutes
we were able to continue our little trip around the island.
Back on the mainland we went to a restaurant to get dinner and ate a chicken which is a specialty of the Chuncheon region. It was pretty good, although a little spicy for me, but I enjoyed wearing a bib for the meal. Minjeong’s mom picked us up again and brought us to the city center where we went to a cafe where Minjeong would go when she grew up. There we had some dessert and at 9 pm we had to take the train back to Seoul to make sure we could get back to Jason’s place by metro. Around 11 pm we had made it back and Astrid had the idea of all getting face masks on. I got out some of the masks I had bought and the guys enjoyed the little treat just as much as the girls. At 1.30 am I fell right into my bed and was sound asleep.
