A dream come true! I finally got to visit the Hello Kitty cafe!
There are a couple of Hello Kitty cafes knocking about in Korea. I thought that I would have to visit the main one in Hongdae, but on a recent trip to Daejeon, we found one there. What a lovely surprise! I am slightly obsessed with Hello Kitty! I have far too much Hello Kitty merchandise for a grown woman in her thirties, but I think this is one of the reasons I love living in Asia, it is perfectly acceptable to do so. I haven't flown Hello Kitty Air or given birth in the Hello Kitty hospital, but they are definitely on the to-do list!
Hell Kitty is actually about forty, she's not looking bad for an old girl. Hello Kitty aka Kitty White was invented in Japan, in 1974, by the Sanrio company, and Yuko Shimizu first designed her. She is part of the Japanese culture if cuteness, kawaii, and was originally marketed to pre-adolescent females. She was part of the White family, from the suburbs of London and was born on November 1st. She has a twin sister named Mimi and is portrayed as
a bright and kind girl.
We had spied the cafe the previous day, and returned in our tired and hungover state to give into our inner girlishness. I wish we had had these kinds of things when I was growing up. We saw the cutest thing ever two dads with their daughters. There's no way my dad would of took me to such a place when I was a kid. The cafe is spread out over three floors. I think the top floor was smoking, but I didn't go up there. The ground floor didn't have a lot of space, but we sat in one of the Hello Kitty sofas in the window. There was lots of space on the second floor, but I don't think there were any sofas.
We went and ordered our coffees. I hate to say it but the cakes didn't look too appealing. I was hoping for a slice of cheesecake with Kitty's face beaming up at me, but it wasn't to be. You could get macaroons or huge cakes to share. They also had a case with Hello Kitty merchandise that you could buy. The Hello Kitty jewelry was pretty, but there
were no price tags, so I'm thinking it was expensive. The coffees were the same price as everyone else. We were given Hello Kitty buzzers. The coffees were great they had decorated them with Hello Kitty pictures. We took a million pictures about the coffees, they were just so cute, and they did different designs on them, too.
Also the Hello Kitty theme continued in the toilets. The stall was covered in Hello Kitty, and the mirror was Hello Kitty shaped. Fab! Although they were a bit grotty. I was sad when we finally had to leave the cafe, it was a lovely place for a bit of escapism. Photos are a bit shit because they are off my phone, as I forgot my camera.
