Edit Blog Post
Sad news: I started this blog last night at work (on a PC) and I wrote a good portion of it. When I returned to it, it asked me to log in, and deleted my stories. So here I go again. P.S. This is a couple weeks old at this point.
The last few weeks have been a whirlwind. Mostly because of drama/frustration/lack of communication at work. This includes working Saturdays, which means 6 day work weeks with 1 day off. The good part of the whirlwind was our FIRST and possibly only, visitor! Jeanne has already come and gone. It was SO wonderful to have someone from home here and get to show them our life here. I know she enjoyed seeing the places and things we experience everyday. She also reminded us how different/foreign of a place this is.
We spent the first two days with her in Seoul and showed her as much as we could there. We did Seoul Tower (Namsan Tower), the War Memorial, which was pretty impressive, Yeouido, and quite a few other things. Jeanne brought with her amazing weather, and it didn't rain a single drop until the night she was heading
to the airport. I think that's pretty incredible considering it's been raining every week since we've been here. The weather was beautiful. She also brought fall with her! A little over a week ago, I was in a tank top and shorts sweating in the humidity. Two nights ago, I was in smart wool socks, and 3 coats riding on the back of Vicki! It came suddenly and forcefully but fall is here. And since I found a place that makes chai latte's, I'm okay with it. During the day, it's been crisp, clear, and delightfully chilly. The nights on the other hand....make me scared for the winter in the this country!
Jeanne also brought gifts from the land of everything! Jake got his new bike. I got excedrin migraine, dry shampoo, a new straightener, and other necessities. 😊 And of course, gooey butter cake and coffee cake! Yum! It was so refreshing to have a familiar face around! More on Jeanne's visit on the next blog...
Also happening in the last few weeks, Jake road a century on his bike while we had a day off for the Chuseok Holiday (Korean Thanksgiving). The day before and after
he road, the weather was wonderful, but Wednesday, we started at 7AM in slight rain and it actually didn't stop raining once all day. I was following Jake on the scooter with water and snacks in my back pack. We got about a mile and he had a flat tire. Not a great start. All of the necessary tools for the flat tire were at home so I turned around and got them while he sat by the side of the road. After at least a half hour delay, we started again. He road for 55 miles before taking a lunch break. We actually went all the way to Daejon (the next town south of us) and back, using the small, winding, roads.
I have now lived in Korea longer than any other place, besides home, of course. My year is more than half way through and it has flown by. Things are much different now than they were at the beginning. At first, little things were really frustrating and I tried to make sense out of everything. That job will kill you because it's impossible to make sense out of most things here. At some point you have
to give up and just accept that that's how things are done here. I still get frustrated every one in a while but I've also come to expect things a certain way. It's kind of nice when you adjust to everything and quit wanting it to be the same as home. There are definitely things I will miss about Korea when I'm at home.
Speaking of home, my little brothers have turned 17 and my sister is about to have a baby! Those are things I miss...family, birthdays, babies...Oh, what I'd give to be home this month!
