And after the quick look at Daegu, it was a short train ride southeastwards to the my final destination in Korea, the port city of Busan, also the second largest city after Seoul. Geographically almost exactly at diagonally opposite ends of the country vis-a-vis the capital Seoul, Busan nevertheless has much importance of its own to boast of. It was pretty much the only large city standing after the initial wave of attacks from the North during the Korean War, and it was using Busan as the military base that the Southern and allied UN forces were able to eventually beat back the Northern troops, retake Seoul, and in fact even temporarily capture Pyeongyang, before a Chinese-backed counter-offensive eventually pushed forces back to the infamous 38th parallel, leading to an uneasy armistice stalemate that still remains ... read more

Leaving Japan was not a difficult choice, as I find that its time to leave a country when you know how expensive something is without converting it into your own currency, you can work your way around the cities subway with no problems whichever city you are in, and you know the response that you will get once you speak English to a local. If you read my last blog then you will know that I didn’t warm to Japan that much, so I wasn’t expecting much from South Korea. I got the slow ferry from Fukuoka to Busan and travelled for 6 hours in a cabin room with 2 old Japanese men who spoke no English, but helped me set up my ‘bed’ on the floor and the highlight of the trip was the TV ... read more

It is very easy to travel in Busan and all that you need is a Busan Metro Line Map and a transportation card, either T- money or Cashbee card. To get to the beach , take Line 2 and alight at Gwangan station, exit 5. Go in the evening and take a nice evening walk along the beach. The beach is clean with good sea view. There are many pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops around. At around 7pm, the surrounding buildings and the Gwangan bridge in the middle of the sea will be lighted up. The view of the lighted up bridge is spectacular. There are also many youngsters gathered at the talent corner, enjoying the performances of budding future stars singing away, an open air K-pop concert.... read more

During the Korean War, some 4000 followers of the Taegeukdo religion, refugees from other parts of the wartorn land, settled in this region of Busan, erecting as their homes some 800 wooden shacks. These cubicle houses are packed closely so that they seem to be comforting each other and living a happy life in harmony. It is very comforting to see rows upon rows of delightful mismatched houses in hues of light blue, pink, green, yellow. Among these houses, you can spot some taller, more modern looking buildings which are the hospitals, churches and schools. The government has transformed some 300 empty houses into galleries, book cafes and other cultural facilities while local colleges and village residents have worked together to produce art works placed at various alley way corners. It is an interesting place to ... read more

Today was my last day in Busan. Taejongdae Cliffs was the first place I went to see today. To get there I had to take a subway and a bus and after arriving there I took a Taejongdae Danubi tourist train. I could have also walked there but I wanted to try the train. It was really convenient because you can hop on and get off the train at certain stops. Taejongdae is one of the representative scenic sites of Busan. The scenery was amazing and all the rocky cliffs were really impressive. After Taejongdae I went to BIFF (Busan International Film Festival) Square. I didn't spent there that much time but what I saw was that the streets were full of people and there were lot of shops and cafés. There were also hand prints ... read more

Day 10 Yesterday I first went to Oryukdo Skywalk. The skywalk is set up to 35 meters, it's 15 meter long and it's built to coastal cliff. When I stepped to the skywalk I had to put these bootees over my shoes so that I won't be scratching the glass. After that I went to see the 40 Steps Cultural theme street. The 40 steps and the surrounding area was made to show the joys and sorrows of refugees and those displaced by the Korean War during the difficult times in 50s and 60s. The area was nice but in my opinion there wasn't that much too see. Next I went to Chungnyelsa Shrine. The shrine is dedicated to the patriotic Korean fighters who died during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The place is also ... read more

Today I first went to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple. On my way there I met three Koreans Sun Ho, Eun Sol and So Hyun, and they asked if I'd like to see the temple with them. The temple was built in 1376 on the rocks and stones near sea and it's a Buddhist temple. We were there about 2 hours taking pictures and walking around. After seeing the temple we went together to have lunch near Haeundae Beach. We went to a restaurant called Donenu and Sun Ho told me that it's a franchise restaurant and that they have restaurants also in Seoul. We took samgyeopsal and it was really good. After we finished eating, we said goodbye and I continued my day to the Haeundae Beach and Busan SEA LIFE Aquarium. The beach was really beautiful ... read more

Today was my first whole day in Busan and I first went to Gamcheon Culture Village. I went there with bus and it was my first time using Korean local buses. It was really convenient way of moving around, even though the bus stops were announced only in Korean. In the Gamcheon Culture Village there are lot of colorful small houses and it is built on a hillside. The entire village is an art and tourist site and it's full of little alleys. In the village I went to eat to a restaurant called Daebakjip. There I got to choose the meat I wanted to eat and then I fried the meat myself and wrapped the slices to a lettuce. After that I went to Dadaepo Beach. It is a sand beach and there were lot ... read more

The weather is finally nice so, of course, my first reaction is to spend as much time outside as possible. Luckily, I am an easy bus / subway ride into some of the best beach areas in Busan - Gwangalli and Haeundae - and have been spending the last several weekends there. This has led to many fun adventures, meeting new friends, and good times all around. In Gwangalli, my new favorite Korean bar - Sharky's - has beach bags where you can order either 4 or 6 shots worth of a mixed drink and take it to go with you on the beach. Margaritas on the beach?? Yes please! Nothing better than walking around in the sun and enjoying the sights with a huge margarita in hand :D I also visited the fish market in ... read more

Easter Sunday, April 5th, I visited Lotte shopping mall. This place doesn't compare to anything I've seen in the U.S. It is 12 floors of awesomeness. I took the metro/subway to the mall and exited and Nampo-dong, which fed me into the first floor of the mall. It has tons of seating and so many different places to eat that you cannot choose easily. I kept turning my head from one side to another and was so overwhelmed with the options I decided to get right to shopping for what I needed. Each floor has different items to shop for. For example, one floor has young women's fashions, another floor has men's fashion, home furnishing, and so on. One floor is dedicated to shoes and purses- I almost had a heart attack. I saw so many ... read more
