Hey everyone, Oops I definitely meant to write this last weekend. As they say, time flies when you’re having fun! I mentioned in my last post that this past week was Chuseok, Korea’s version of Thanksgiving. Because it is one of the major national holidays, we had the whole week off (to be fair, we only get Christmas Day and New Year’s Day off for our winter holidays… Not even a few days around the holidays, but only the days themselves). Having so much time off was wonderful, but I must admit the timing was a bit annoying for my coworker and myself, as we hadn’t yet been paid before the holiday. Actually, our payday fell within the holiday week, but since the banks were closed all week (and this Monday) due to the national holiday, ... read more

David here... On to the 8th (and 5th new) country of this trip, South Korea. We were both feeling a touch sad about leaving Taiwan after it had become so familiar and easy for us in the 2 weeks we'd been there. Korea is supposed to have less English speakers than previous places we'd been, so we wondered how we'd get on. The flight was surprisingly good actually as the Air Busan plane had tons of leg room as standard and came with a free rice dish and soft drinks. Disembarking (deplaning is NOT a real word) we were quickly processed through immigration and into the baggage claim area, which was heaving. Our bags arrived safely and we were then into the arrivals hall. We had a scare with the first ATM as it had nothing ... read more

Busan est une ville extraordinaire! Une jolie grande ville (2ème ville de la Corée du Sud), au bord de la mer, connue pour son petit quartier village avec des maisons de toutes les couleurs sur une colline. Busan, is an extraordinary town! A beautiful big city (2nd town of South Korea), on the coast. Famous for its small district village, with small colourful houses on hill.

Busan is a brief 1 hour bus ride from Gyoengji. It’s the second largest city in Korea and was its capital during the Korean War after the North invaded and quickly occupied Seoul. It sits on hills overlooking the Sea of Japan, has an efficient metro system and is a major port. It’s rainy season here in Asia. I’d been lucky to date. On arrival in Busan it was raining fairly continuously. With only 2 days in town before I had to head back to Seoul and fly on to Shanghai, I couldn’t let a little rain slow me down. I headed for the one starred sight in Lonely Planet, Gamcheon Culture Village. It had been a slum clinging to steep hills above the city. Artists and students partnered with the community to refurbish it with ... read more

2nd April: We travelled overnight and arrived at Busan in the early morning. I hadn't slept on the bus, so was in a terrible mood. Most people got off the bus to watch the sunrise, but I couldn't be bothered. I got up a little while later and found a coffee shop that was open. It was more of a hole in the wall joint than an actual coffee shop, but it was open at 7 am, which is lovely, you never find that in Seoul. Armed with my coffee, I took a wander along the beach and was surprised at how busy it was. There were people out running, biking, and walking. In the sea there were people swimming and surfing. We were at Songjeong Beach, which I thought I had been to years ago ... read more

Today was the earliest morning for Ralph and I. We woke up about 630AM to get ready and head out to the ferry station out in Fukuoka. We didn’t expect the weather to be bad, but it was raining heavily in the morning. After getting on the ferry, it was about a 3 hour boat ride to Busan in South Korea going about 60MPH. The ocean was pretty foggy and choppy, but I did manage to get some shots of us coming into the port. You can already tell how different building structure wise compared to the previous Japan cities. Unfortunately, Ralph and I don’t speak a word of Korean, so there are lots of pointing, grunting, and poor attempts at Google Translate. I ate at Lotteria, which is South Korea’s biggest burger joint. Had a ... read more

Tuesday 6th October 2015 Today we sadly wave goodbye to Japan having spent a wonderful 3 weeks here. In order to leave Japan though we had to take the train to Fukuoka and then a local bus to the ferry terminal. The journey was fine on the Shinkansen, but on getting to the bus stop and realising we had just missed the bus and the next one wasn't for 20 mins, we soon began to realise, with the crowd of local people in the queue behind us that we were going to have to fight to get a spot on the next bus with our massive backpacks. We did fight our way on and squished ourselves on the back seat with luggage all around us and arrived at the ferry terminal 30 mins later. We checked ... read more

Busan International Film Festival is held every year, normally in early October. This year, the 20th film festival ran from the 1st to 10th October. This was the third time I have been to the film festival. The first time I just turned up and bought tickets on the day, last year I was slightly more organised, and this year, I think I cracked it. The film catalogue is released on online in mid-September. so you can see what films take your fancy. This is a huge selection, there are films from all over the world, with a special focus on Asian film. There is also a great timetable that shows what film will be shown on each day at each cinema. I find this invaluable when it come to planning. The cinemas are Busan Cinema Centre, ... read more

The trip over couldn’t have been more than an hour, but stepping out of Busan International Airport I felt like I’d travelled to a different continent! The grey, drizzly sky of Osaka was replaced with crystal clear blue, the confusing signs pointing here there and everywhere were gone and it only cost me 1300 Won (1 EURO!) for the one hour bus ride to Haeundae Beach where I would be staying the next few days. It’s probably fair to say I liked South Korea almost immediately! I asked the driver to drop me off at the beach and although his English wasn’t top-notch he seemed to understand what I wanted. I had directions to my hostel printed but they were directions from the subway stop. I had no idea where I was when I got off ... read more
