Slept in until after 8am. Had coffee at airport while trying to decide how to get to hotel – very helpful airport people provided us with password. Then, we took the metro to City Hall station and walked to Raffles.

Our room wasn't ready, so we had a quick refreshing drink of water at the pool bar, then walked to Chinatown. Not a very interesting walk, though we did cross the river. Lunch in Chinatown at street café, full of tourists, but I was able to have mee goreng and sambal spinach. Very happy – just need to find ice kachang. Then through tooth-relic Buddha temple, including roof garden and museum – stuff on all floors. Chanting session when we left.

Walked through old streets, up hill, then down to other temple. Pouring rain, but we found a quiet park to wait out worst of storm. Metro back to hotel. Shown to our lovely garden suite, then rest.

Out again in evening … first to Clarke Quay for a boat tour. Lovely breeze and good view of the skyline of Singapore. Wandered through the gauntlet of touts but none of the restaurants looked appealing. So found a small shop selling basic Malaysian food on a street lined with nightclubs … a few young people eating, but no tourists. Cheap; not great.

Wandered back through Chinatown; a lot of shops and eateries were closed down … must be Sunday night in Singapore.
