Merlion Statue
Symbol of Singapore And she's back again! Not complaining, absolutely love the place! This time I got to spend two nights in Singapore, then had a nightstop in Sydney again (separate blog entry) and finished the trip with another two nights back in Singapore. We actually did so much in this week, was an amazing trip and crew. On our first night in Singapore I had to take a miss on heading out for drinks. Was absolutely exhausted from my weekend antics and wanted to be fresh for the rest of the trip. I managed to get about 14hours sleep so obviously needed it! The next day a group of us headed to the beach at Sentosa Island. This really is the best place to come if you are looking to catch some rays as it's too hot to sit by a pool, and bit boring too. So we chilled at one of the beaches called TanJong Beach. There was a trendy little bar here playing some music, and had a pool bar. Me and a couple of the girls tried to walk out to a little island that we could see, but we ended up having to swim. Wasn't too far but I
did feel I looked like a dog paddling! Need to sort out my fitness. We made it over, yay. One of the girls said that there was a signpost nearby to mark southern part of continental Asia so we had an explore to try find it. Had to go over a wooden rickety bridge, then we found the sign and there was a broken palm tree that you could walk along that hung out over the sea. We had a go on it, for photo purposes of course. There is plenty to do at Sentosa, such a fun place. Crazy how it is mainly man made. We didn't stay too long at beach as was so hot. Headed back and got ourselves ready for meeting for dinner. We went to food area called Lau Pa Sat. It is right in the centre of Singapore and is quite a renowned food area. However the inside was closed for renovation so we sat out at the Boon Tat Street area, which was perfect anyways. The whole street and road is blocked out, making way for tables and food stalls. We were on the chicken satay which was delicious, and me and another
girl had a steamed fish strips that came wrapped in a bamboo leaf with chilli - so good! Really cheap here too! Also seemed to be mainly locals eating here which is usually a good sign that the food will be great. Afterwards we just headed for some drinks at local bar to the hotel. There was a live band playing, and would sing any requests that you had. Even if the guy didn't know the song he would quickly look it up, have a listen then start performing it. We were amazed and his number one fans!
The next day we kept it quite local to venture about as we were leaving later that afternoon for Sydney. We walked to Bugis Market which is a big market place with food, drinks and little stalls with clothes, jewellery, shoes... has a bit of everything and good place to buy some souvenirs! Afterwards we went to an area called Little India for lunch. Again it is so cheap here - was about two British pounds for a curry dish and freshly made naan bread. The man at the stall we went to was making the naan in a huge clay
pot on request. Everything I have to eat in Singapore just gets better and better. There is an abundance of food stalls here and also a section with clothes like Indian sari dresses. We then left later on this evening for Sydney and returned again a couple nights later on the Friday.
We were pretty exhausted after our Sydney sectors so just met for couple drinks then bed about midnight as some of us had quite a big adventure planned for the next day. I love my cycling and had heard there was an island nearby that you could go to and cycle around, and turns out one of the girls on my crew had been before so four us went there. The island is called Pualo Ubin. We got a taxi to Changy Village which is near the airport, and got a ferry from here to the island. It only took about 10minutes to get there and cost 2.50 dollars. Then once you arrive there is a street full of bike hire rental places where you can hire a bike for the day for only10dollars. So a very cheap day out and it is so worth it. The
bikes were really good and had little baskets for us. The boys at the shop gaves us a map of the island but it is quite easy to find your way around as it is not that big a place. Think the to get round the island is about 8km. The tracks are all well signposted. Some of the tracks were a bit more 'off road' than we expected and had to walk our bikes up hill. Think the 35degree heat didn't help, was unbearable at points but we pushed on through. Managed to cycle all round, the best part being at Chek Jawa where you could walk round on a coastal walk. The scenery at this island is just breathtaking. Definitely my kind of day out! When we returned back to the public jetty we got ourselves some food and fresh coconuts to drink from. Great day! Back to hotel pool for dunk to cool down then got ready for our last night here. Few of us walked to another food area called Glutens Bay, had chicken satay again, can't get enough! This place seemed a bit more touristy, was really nice but we kind of preferred the food
and atmosphere at Lou Pa Sat.
Afterwards met everyone by the pool for a tipple. Iv started drinking Johnie Walker whiskey, must be the Scottish in me! Had a couple, then back to nearby bar for drinks and the band were singing again. We then headed to Parkview Square to the Divine Bar which is famously know for having barmaids dressed as angles on trapeze. If bottle of wine is ordered then the barmaid flys up and gets it, the more expensive the wine the higher she flys. We actually couldn't afford any of the wines so went for the cocktail option. The girl still went up and gave us a little show anyways which was really nice. The architecture of the building and decor inside was gorgeous - apparently the building was used in a recent Batman movie. However disappointingly there was not much of an atmosphere in the bar and it was very quiet for a Saturday night. I'm glad to have went and to see it though. Rest of the night was spent back at our local bar, then a 3am walk to food market for more chicken satay and Tiger beer.
For last day
myself and couple of the girls walked to The Botanical Gardens. I kept saying every trip that I wanted to come and see them as some of the parts look a bit like they are from the movie Avatar. It was so hot on this day, was really struggling with the heat. So once there we opted for a little bus audio tour to show us around the gardens. Was really interesting place. They have indoor gardens which has a huge indoor waterfall, then they have big tree pods (the Avatar looking trees) which are trees that they have basically created themselves and it functions through solar power. There were loads of different gardens and each part had a story to tell. Also get amazing views of Marina Bay Sands from here. The rest of the day was then spent just chilling by the pool and having lunch. And it was homeward bound that evening.
Such an action packed week, and I got to do everything that I had on my Singapore 'to do' list. Was so great thanks to the crew I was with. Definitely growing more in love with Singapore every time that I go!
