To say that Singapore Zoo is a bit out of the city is both fact and fiction... For starters, it takes about 70mins to get there involving 2 trains and a bus, but although it gets a little more forrested, you never actually leave the city. I have a feeling that the whole island is just one big city. So after hearing that it is classed as one of the best in the world, we deciding to head there for the afternoon.
Now think of the local zoo.... now add a
rainforest.... now take away
nearly all the glass... and add some of the best
laksa I've ever had and that's
Singapore Zoo!!! From the moment you enter, it is an experience not to be forgotten. We managed to see Probiscus Monkeys, Orang-a-tans, and the African wildlife including Lions, Giraffes and Rhinos before getting hit with a tropical shower (at least that's what they call it.... I'd call it a
torrential downpour!!!!)
After hiding under a shelter for a while, we thought stuff it.... we came here to see everything, not hide in a corner and decided to brave it. On we marched, through rain, beside Apes and
Elephants and even some White Tigers. Made us feel almost "David Attenboroughish".
Always reminds me of something someone windswept and interesting once said.... "I don't need to outrun them....as long as I outrun you I'll be OK."
The afternoon passed quickly and before we knew it, it was closing time.... but "not so" we said!!! Singapore is the first zoo to provide a Night Safari to showcase the nocturnal habits of some of its animals.
I can hear you thinking "walk around the same thing you just saw... no thanks." But no!... it's a completely different zoo right next door. Even better than that.... as we were walking up to it, a guy comes up to us and says he bought 2 double passes for the zoo and the night safari and now can't go to the second. Bonus!!! Free stuff!!! Now, the night safari begins with dinner and a fire twirling, spitting and dart blowing display, then a show in an amphitheatre with everything from big cats to hyenas to wolves howling at the moon and even a boa constrictor.
After the show, there are three walk trails that take you around the park or
alternatively a tram that takes you the long way around. Opting to walk, we missed the commentary but gained valuable time with the animals that were able to be seen (which surprisingly is most of them). We ended up pairing up with a couple from India and made our way around playing charades as we all tried to work out what the other was saying.... not an easy task when it's also very dark.
Leaving the zoo as the last thing on the agenda for Singapore means that the next time you hear from me, it will be from Phuket!! Singapore has been great and I'd recommend it to anyone.... safe, clean, friendly and easy to navigate. Ticks all round from me.
So thank you Singapore and goodbye.... hello Phuket!! Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. ~Mark Twain
