Singapore has changed an incredible amount in the 20 years since we lived here from 1992 to 1994. There are many more developed areas of the city, especially Marina Bay. Some things, however, have changed very little such as our special place Little India. It was always the area we loved most, not just because it was the first suburb we lived in all those years ago, it was where I had my first full time teaching job and the food is simply amazing, but because it is like being absorbed into a unique cultural experience within an already intense cultural experience. The sounds of temple chants and the Hindi language and the flip flop of thongs, the smells of spices and flowers, the sight of a multitudes of flowing coloured saris, flower garlands and Indian temple spires and the smells and tastes...ahh, the taste! Our favourites are Paratha and curry sauce at the Telok markets, and curries from up Serengoon Road.
