Hi all, Since I'm not likely to be able to keep up with everyone properly (over the phone) the next 4 months and have grown tired of posting photos on facebook, I've decided to try out this new-fangled 'Blogging' thing that I heard about on that BBC news show, Click! By the way, I feel like its been about a month since I left London. It was a bit of a whirlwind towards the end with work (and a cold) in Chicago, an amazing weekend in New York, some great rocking out to rock band in Shepherds Bush and several nights of pretending to clean and pack up the house while drinking far too much red wine! After nealy a week here in Singapore I am finally starting to settle in a bit. I only got ... read more

Travel to Singapore - VIP Style While waiting for our Indian visa to be cleared we had at least four nights to kill in Malaysia. On our last full day in KL, we planned to head to Melaka, about two hours south of KL, the following day. Through the joy of Facebook, though, we learned that my friend Laura was in Singapore visiting her sister and helping with the birth of her first niece. We immediately told her that if she had time to see us, we would be on a bus the following day to Singapore. So, away we went. Similar to our last minute decision to travel from Thailand to Malaysia, our decision to head to Singapore was just as sudden. So, in the morning we made our way to one of the ... read more

Family Trip! The family got in on Feb 19th and we met up at the MRT station. I was only kind of embarrassed at dad's infamous yell "SPAAAA!" I wonder what the locals were thinking...Anyway, we met up and I took them to NUS for a look around. It didn't take very long before the question of the trip started making its first appearance...."Can we get some beer?" We tried to get some on campus but the Munchie Monkey didn't serve alcohol until 6:00PM. Come on Munchie Monkey, its 5 o'clock somewhere. We made our way over to the Raffle's hotel for some classy cocktails. S$33 a pop! You would think that S$33 would get you a damn good drink right? HA. You get a drop of gin in some fruit juice, a floor full of ... read more

So, we arrived in Singapore, and stayed at the Pan Pacific. It was hot and humid and exhausting. We visited Thian Temple, The Botanical Gardens, saw the Merlion, and had dinner at the Pan Pacific's signature restaurant on the 37th Floor !! We visited Chinatown and Little India. Changi Airport is the most amazing place with a Butterfly garden, and Koi carp and enough stuff going on to keep you occupied for ages (even for Gemini's like Grahame and I !!!) ... read more

The Coconut Man I had heard the myths about the Coconut Man. He stayed up all night hacking at coconuts to get their juice which he sold to the nearby hawker centers (food courts). He also has a side business of selling beer to local residents after hours for a good price. He could be seen only when he chose to be seen. You didn't just go out and find the Coconut Man...he found you. With some practice you might be able to use the Coconut Man bird call...an ancient Malaysian ritual used to summon the mysterious coconut juice king....or you might be walking back from having a few drinks Holland Village with some rowdy friends and stumble upon his humble throne. The later was the case for my first Coconut Man encounter. The Coconut Man ... read more

BY ZACK It was weird watching the inauguration of Obama late at night in our little hotel room in Hoi An, Vietnam. My dad had trouble staying awake for it and kept drifting in and out. People in Vietnam seem to like Obama, but there was no celebrating on the street...or no more than usual. The Tet festival is approaching (Lunar New Year)...so there is lots of celebration going on all through Asia. One of my favorite things we have done on this trip so far is a cooking class in Hoi An on the last day we were there. I volunteered to help the chef cook vegetable spring rolls, and when we were all putting our spring rolls in the fryer my Dad accidentally dropped his in the oil and burned another woman in the ... read more
