On our 2nd day at Singapore we got up early and went for a quick swim with my cousins in the 34 degree weather because we were going to Sentosa Island! When we had driven to the island I found out that we couldn't swim in the ocean thanks to an oil spill and their water park was closed we all thought we were going to die of the weather! but we didn't thankfully. my Aunty and uncle were part of a club that had a one side glass pool so we went there. After that my cousins, aunty and uncle went back to their house for a swim an we caught a taxi back to the place on sentosa with the oil spill and me, my brother and my mum did the zip line over ... read more

Our travel friends Mary and David had planned to do a P & O relocation cruise Singapore to Brisbane and invited Marg and I to travel with them. However, I (Rob) had a bowel cancer screening test that was too close to the departure date to risk a booking. The good news was that the report cam back no pullups, no cancer, all clear. Having contacted a local cruise specialist agent, I found we were able to get a reasonable cabin right at the last minute. Several attempts to get accommodation and flight details from David proved evasive and fruitless, so in the end I just had to ask more directly advising that we had been able to book a two berth cabin. They had booked a Singapore Airline flight, but we got a great deal ... read more

It seems we have been planning the BBA-V4 for ages and that we would never get it underway. But today was D-Day and the Great South African Adventure is on its way. A typical, beautiful, sunny morning greeted us after less sleep than usual as we woke early in anticipation of the day ahead. Our daughter Erin with grandson Brayden arrived ahead of time and we loaded up and headed for Tauranga airport and the first flight of the day, a short 25 minute hop to Auckland. After a tearful goodbye it was time to board and let the all women crew wing us to Auckland. It is a well marked walking route between the Domestic and International terminals at Auckland. The green line twisted and turned with most of the route under at least half ... read more

If it was not Sunday when we arrived in Dubai (I think it was, just) it was definitely Sunday (local time) when we departed Dubai at 2.40am Unlike on our journey over we were not able to walk from our arrival gate to our departure gate, we needed to take the train between terminals. Even after the time spent travelling between terminals we were able to spend a little bit of time in the Emirates Lounge. We took the opportunity to drink plenty of free mineral water and walk around a bit before facing up to the longest sector of our journey, the 13’15” leg from Dubai to Melbourne. During the night? I’m not really sure that it actually was night because we were flying towards the sun, but all the shutters were down and the ... read more

Tuesday 6th February 2018 Awake at just after 7am feeling refreshed after yesterday’s marathon around Singapore. Just so much to see and do. Sarah went off to put the laundry in the machine.....leaves less to sort when we get home. Then it was showered and dressed and off out again. Today will be a day at Singapore Zoo.......we don’t usually visit a zoo but this one is world famous for the way it’s set up, the research they are involved in and the way the animals are treated and looked after. Firstly we called in at the money changers at Little India and then headed out of the city on the MRT to Ang Mo Kio, then it was hop onto the number 73 bus which takes you to the front door of the Zoo. Friday 2nd February 2018 Awake a little earlier today to finish off the packing and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we head off to Da Nang airport for the next and final leg of our south east Asia adventure. We have loved our time in Hoi An on this our second visit. It’s a place that has so much to see and do with a beautiful old town, great countryside and a nice beach not far away. We will be sad to say goodbye to this special place. Also we will be sad to leave the Camellia Homesta, it’s been a perfect place for us. A family who really do care for their guests and want them to enjoy their hospitality. The rooms are big, facilities great and the breakfasts are huge with a great selection ... read more

I am sitting in Singapore Airport lounge, at 06:30 trying to catch up on my blogs and dawn is breaking. So here goes 14/1/18 It has stopped raining!! It looks like it may start again - very soon, but doesn't. We like to take river trips when we can as it puts things in place for us. Accordingly, we boarded a small pleasure craft endearingly called a bum boat and sailed along the Singapore river. There was a crew member who was quite entertaining. Singapore has 700 square kilometres of space for 5 1/2 million people who live on top of each other, literally, in high rise tower blocks. You can see a number of them from the river as well as a lot of office buildings. The residential tower blocks are those with washing hanging ... read more

Firstly, a big thankyou to everyone who read the last entry on the blog and a bigger thankyou still to those who added a comment or two - fortunately none of them fell into the 'offensive or rude' categories and were, therefore, automatically blocked by the site!! Now, that would have been something! So, let's move on to the next blog entry and with this in mind, many of you may know that Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, a man already heavily involved in the British Empire's expansion into South East Asia, including into Malaysia and Java, Indonesia. However, before someone looks to get a petition together to tear down his statue in Westminster Abbey, it should be remembered that he was a fervent supporter of abolishing slavery and his name ... read more

Here we go Again. Gaynor and I are off on a round the world jaunt (again). This is our 3rd circumnavigation, 2 in this direction heading west (2003, 2017) and 1 heading east (2015). We are as usual popping into the Mother Land to see relatives, they being Gaynor’s Cousin, her children and the last surviving sibling of Gaynor’s dad, Nellie (aged 90+). Also Betty’s side (Gaynor’s mum) which include her sister Gaynor and her children and partners. Last but not least our own Tabitha (our baby) who moved to London nearly 3 years ago and has settled in quite nicely. Living in Clapton and has taken on the task of organising our time in London for which we are very grateful as we are renowned for just sitting around and hoping everything comes to us. ... read more

Uneventful flight SQ to Changi. Have to say the service on SIA seems to have declined since I last flew with them...its ok as in its as good as Business Class on say Korean Air now but way lower than Air New Zealand amazing service. SIA seem to have spent a lot of money making a new A380 interior look the same and one of their 20 year old 747's. Changi T3 smooth arrival and not too crowded so rapid passage to baggage and beyond! Stopped at the small convenience store in arrivals and got snacks and stuff (no minibar blow out four us!!) noted that wine was S$35 a bottle for plonk!! Checked into Crowne Plaza at the airport - also in T3 - this is a great hotel for transit and we have used ... read more
