Today was another special day - at trip to Raffles in the afternoon but more on that later. In the morning we decided to walk to Central Plaza some 1km away from our hotel. It is a modern shopping centre in Tiong Bahru Road and Hazel did some shopping for small items. At 13.30H we were all dressed and waiting at reception. Hazel had brought a surprise outfit for this special trip to Raffles. It comprised a lilac Indian dress with matching trousers and looked very special. I made the effort of putting on a shirt and long trousers - not at all easy after the freedom of a month in shorts and a teeshirt. The tour began at the Asian History Museum and Raffles Square. I got the impression that before Sir Stamford Raffles sailed ... read more

Another day of no checking out. I was beginning to think I was never going to leave. However, over breakfast, Hayley and I discussed what I could do today (as herself and Dani were leaving to head for Bali). Looking at the posters, we both decide that the river walk was a good idea as I had not been down the river yet.Starting at Clarke Quay, a picturesque row of colourful buildings which I believe were bars on one side of the river and a shopping mall on the other. It was another lovely day for strolling. Next was Boat Quay where there were bars and restaurants. Walking more south of the river to Merlion Park (the statue resembling the head of a lion and the body of a fish) fronting Marina Bay (and in front ... read more

After we said our goodbyes at Chicago Airport with my brother and his girlfriend Brittany, we boarded our plane for what turned out to be the longest flight either of us had ever done......it ended up being around 20 hours (15 hours and 50 minutes from Chicago to Hong Kong and then another shorter flight of around 4 hours from Hong Kong to Singapore) and the secound part was spent with a screaming toddler sat just in front of us, thank god he wasn't like that on the first plane! The last couple of days in North America were spent with family and friends as we probably won't be seeing them for another year or so. The second to last day some news came through that a friend from my old regiment had died 4 years ... read more
