Buses
Philippean Buses , jump on and jump off! They dont stop ! The long sunny days on the Philippines are amazing , just to sit at the waters edge and take in the amazing views was pure paradise. Sitting there with good food , beer and wonderful memories from the days diving was pure heaven . The area was a Philippine resort and them peole are so happy, they are always happy . It was nt a 5 star resort , it was a cheap basic beach hotel with no ammenities , no disco no arcades no cheesy live singing just people sitting around chatting and drinking at the waters edge.
I was getting slowly obsessed with diving now , all I could think about was when could I go underwater again .There was so much to see and take in , the next few days I was diving all day everyday going way over my self imposed daily budget but I did nt care I just wanted to get down there amongst the fish and wrecks.
I met lovely people there from all over the Philippines , they were happy to see a European guy sharing their resort and it was easy to start up conversation .
I met
Henry
The dive master , what a great job he has ! some special people who I still have contact to Arthie and his wife Sheila who were celebrating their 1st wedding anniversary and June a guy who was with his siblings celebrating the death of thier father , abit weird that but it is normal apparantly.
Shiela and Arthie invited me to Manila , their hometown and June invited me to Angeles where I had just came from so I decided to vist them after here. I was meant to go to Hong Kong to meet up with Rosei but I was nt ready to leave the Philipines just yet .So I told Rosie to go to HK alone and we would meet up in BKK in the Sky tower hotel for a last meal on the skyscraper no saftey rail restaurant the day before she was meant to fly back to the UK and I was due to fly to Australia . But as it happens I turned up 3 or 4 weeks to late so we never saw each other again , this drove home how important it was for me to travel alone without any commitments , to do what I wanted to do .
I
Sunset
At Subic bay . Happy memories.
got back to Angeles happy with that amazing diving experience , I went back there mainly as it has a good airport and I also wanted to meet up with June to see the other side of the city from the view of a local .
He came to the hotel to pick me up on a old motorbike , always smiling he drove me around through the gehtos ( with out helmut of course ) My life was in his hands, I never knew him from Adam but felt as if I could trust him.I saw many sights that not many get to see , the poor side of the city really is poor I asked him to stop now and then but he said it was to unsafe to stop , me being white and or European just caused unrest so it was a mad dash pooing myself everytime we stopped at the traffic lights, I wish I had a helmut on to hide my white face !
We went back to his apartment and I met his family who all lined up to say hello and practise thier very good english . I sat down
on his sofa only to be prodded in the back by a either Colt 45 or Magnum , he did tel me what it was but I have forgotten but this pistol was huge ! and loaded ready to rock and roll ! He seemed a bit embarassed but I found it funny and asked for a Photo of me holdoing it ! He said he needs it there living in Angeles to protet himself and his family , what a way to live ! That night he picked me up in his car and he took me to the local food halls and the food was amazing , I wish I could rememebr what it was we ate but it was delicious and so cheap and so so much it was like minced pork fried with vegtables and some sauce , again I was the only white face to be seen at this outside food hall eating food from plastic plates cooked in makeshift barbeques that resembled cut up dustbins and it was packed and the nosie of everyone talking and laughing that mixed with the music and the smelll of the cooking foods was amazing I was privilleged
Halo Halo
Is what they call this desert of ice cream , baked beans , jelly, crushed ice and cream . Sounds horrble but is yummy to have experienced this .
The next day I flew down south to Kalibo airport and then a 4 hour bus trip to Caticlan followed by a 1 hour ferry trip on a what looked like a homemade ferry to the lovely Island of Boracay.
I had read that Boracy has the most whitest of sands in the world , and on first impressions this seemed to be very true ! It was a paradise Island still left relatively untouched by mega tourisim , you can tell if a place is stil relatively untouched if there is no Macdonalds and no Starbucks to be found, luckly so far on my travles I have not seen many of these horrlible places. In fact even in Thailand I saw a KFC and next door was the Thai version, tasting exactly the same but costing half the price it was always packed out and the KFC alway empty . this made me smile a bit, good on you Thailand !
