Then I heard him rolling down and Barbie screamed. "Oh my God! Renz!" I screamed back. There was a moments silence. I thought of how I can bring him back to town without a stretcher. What would his mother say to me? The one responsible for bringing her kids there.
It was dark and we only had pen lights. Only three of us were hiking back to town. It was the dangerous part of the trek. The one where we had to climb big boulders one on top of the other. If you fall you're seriously injured, if not dead. Renz was pulling his sister up the rock. He wasn't sure footed so he got dragged down. Luckily his sister was holding his arm and managed to stop his fall. He seriously could have died.
After seeing the place two weeks ago, Marq, Dulce, and I decided to bring our kids to Daraitan. Marq and Dulce planned to camp overnight while I opted to take my group back home late in the afternoon. But we got there late and because there were so many of us the trek took a lot more time. Which I didn't foresee.
This
time being the kuya (big brother) I had to be brave and lead them in the cave that Marq, Dulce and I failed to enter the week before. Because there was a bat. There are several caves. Two that we entered previously were too small for the group and the other two had snakes, so I was told. But we found another cave that turned out to be much much bigger than the previous caves! This cave went on forever! The rocks were sharp so we could not afford to fall. After walking about half a kilometer the river started. I had to lead them through the water. I had to gauge how deep the water was. When It got to the point that it was too deep we stopped. Hence we didn't see the end of the cave. Which was okay for me. It's a cave with a river inside and I'm sure it looked the same all throughout.
It was already dark when we got out of the cave and I knew that it was too dangerous to trek back to the town where we left the van. It was decided that we would stay there overnight
with the other groups. We didn't have tents, nor food. Fortunately the other two groups brought more food than what they needed but most of my kids had to sleep outside the tent. It was cold at night.
I told their parents that we will be back home by 10PM. There was no signal to I couldn't call or text. I decided to trek back to town so I can text their parents. I had to take two people with me because it was too dangerous to go alone. I decided to take Renz and his sister because I knew they grew up in the province and this is not something new to them. We got lost a couple of times and then there was the accident where Renz almost fell off the cliff.
There were other smaller accidents.
Four girls got carried away by the current of the river which we had to cross to get back to the campsite from the caves. Marq and some of the guys were able to save them.
Ken and Daria almost drowned. These two are the class clowns so we thought it was just one of their pranks.
Unfortunately they were not kidding. Ken swallowed a lot of water. He was trying to save Daria and when Daria was able to swim towards the rock Ken found the strength to swim again.
But despite all that we had so much fun diving from the boulders towards the river and diving into the strong current over and over again. I think I'll take them somewhere safer next year.
