We left Dumaguete and Harold helped us catch a bus heading for Sugar Beach. When we arrived at Sugar Beach with a boat and a small boy who was very angry that his brother made him sail us for a low price, we met some locals singing karaokee at the first part of the beach. They invited us in, but we were too tired and just wanted a place to stay. We found a really nice bungalow at Driftwood Village for 600 pesos. Nice, small and cozy place. A real Robinson feeling over the place, everything was made in bamboo and wood.
We spend the next day in real Sugar Beach style. Lazy and not doing anything. We stayed by the beach in some hammocks, it was a really nice sunny day. We had lunch and played some cards at the restaurant. Later we had dinner, really good, rice, chicken and vegetables. A smaller miracle - we could finally stay out in the sun without getting a sunburn. The beach is really beautiful and there is very fine white sand all over the beach, which is why it is called Sugar Beach.
That night was horrible, with way too
many mosquitoes. We spent the next day relaxing at the beach again, but we had to go inside for some time, because it started raining. After lunch, the sun came out again and I tried snorkling along the cliffs on one side of the beach. There were some local teenagers swimming and jumping in the water from some cliffs. They were really enjoying the lazy beach life too. A lot of beautiful fish in many bright colours, many puffers, but I couldnt manage to scare any of them enough to blow up.
The next day - LAST DAY IN THE PHILLIPPINES :-( - we got up at 6:30. We got our sandwiches to go from the kitchen and the boat was there exactly at 7 to pick us up, apparantly they were some of the only people in the Phillippines who used a clock..
We shared the boat with two other girls and we also started out taking the same bus. We had to change in both Hindoba-an and Bayawan before arriving in Duma. From here there was just one boat leaving at 11 in the evening so we took a trike up to the next city, where
the boats left every hour. The boat took 25 minutes and after this we had 3½ hours in bus to Cebu City.
In one of the busses away from Sugar Beach we saw a boy with a very rare hair disease, so half of his face was covered in hair. It didn't seem that he was bothered by it and no one was staring or making fun of him. He was actually a really beautiful boy.
We stayed at Hotel Mercedes in Cabu City, a bit expensive, 860 pesos for one night. A high standard for us, being used to the small Nipa huts.
We had our first ever meal at Jollibee, McDonalds for Phillippinos! It was really good, spicy crispy chicken, rice and a coke. We found a mall where we bought some cheap new converse and flip-flops.
We went to the supermarket to buy some water, crackers and nuts for some children who lived on the street next to our hotel, they only had a piece of cardboard to sleep on and their mom was gone at night-time, probably working as a prostitute going to the hotel rooms with the tourists, really sad but
it seemed the security guy from the hotel was taking care of them, he made sure to wake them up so they could see and eat the food.
The next morning we got up at 6 and packed our things. We took a taxi to the airport. We had some food at the airport and walked around looking at the small shops. We had a lot of time, since traffic hadn't been as heavy as expected. Then off to Bangkok Baby!
