Equating Iligan - Maayong Iligan

When people speak of Maria Cristina Falls, it always equates to Iligan City, as it is the seat of power in Mindanao - that is, Hydroelectric Power. But when we say Iligan City, does it equate only to Maria Cristina Falls? NO.

Iligan is an 81,337-hectare highly urbanized city which was chartered on June 16, 1950 and became a lone district in October 20, 2009.

Iligan City is blessed with 23 waterfalls, the most famous of which is the Maria Cristina Falls located inside the National Power Corporation’s Agus VI & VII Hydroelectric Power Plant Complex. A nature’s park was developed in the compound to give tourist more activities to do like the 4-span zipline that crosses the Agus River and gives a good view of the area and the falls. It also plays host to crocodiles, ostriches and butterflies. Then there is the Tinago Falls located in Ditucalan where one can swim in its lagoon though one needs to climb down and up approximately 365 steps. The Mimbalut Falls located in Buru-un now has a new tourist attraction – the Iligan Paradise Resort that has a zipline passing above the falls. There is also Limunsudan Falls, claimed as the highest waterfalls in the country and though may be located in the hinterland barangay of Rogongon, the scenery is breathtaking that the trek is all worth it. Located in Barangay Bonbonon is the Dodiongan Falls. Though not as majestic as Maria Cristina and Limunsudan Falls, but is equally worth visiting.

Iligan also has 9 springs, the most famous and most visited is the Timoga Spring which is the water source of the Timoga Swimming Pool Complex. The pool complex has 6 swimming pool resorts one of which has a natural spring for those who loves to swim in a natural flowing water not contained in a pool.

For the mountain climbing and hiking enthusiasts, Iligan has Mt. Agad-Agad located in Barangay Pugaan which has an estimated height of about 1,600 feet above sea level. From the top, one can have a panoramic view of the coastal area of Iligan City.




Tourist visits is at its peak in Iligan City during its month-long Diyandi Festival held every September of the year. The highlight of this festival is the celebration of the feast of the patron saint, St. Michael the Archangel, on the 29th of September. Schedule of activities are packed starting September 1 until September 30, sometimes extending to the 1st week of October. Some of the activities include Miss Iligan Beauty Pageant, civic-military parade, procession, Pagpakanaug, Kasadya street dancing competition, Tabo-an Flea Market and Carnival.
