Southern Mindanao, Philippines. For once, I'm just going to try writing from my memory, as the memory is strong. I conceived of this trip 3 or 4 years ago, I always tend to seek out places not many travelers go. My reasoning is simple: I'll find more authentic culture, be able to interact with locals more, see things not completely changed by the dynamics of widespread tourism. There aren't many places on the planet like that, I keep managing to find a few though. Sometimes they are spots that have had some trouble in the past, sometimes they are just out of the way in a country that has better known locations. I don't delude myself into thinking I'm the first one to get there or that local people don't want my tourist dollar. On the ... read more

No ktore by odolalo chipsom, sladkostiam. Stanok maju hned pri vchode do skoly. Ranajky som chcel dat v hranciarni ako vzdy ale okolo 6.10 este zavrete. Prichadzam na plaz bounty. ... read more

At first glance, the street outside the dim sum restaurant looks like one in downtown Manila. Roadside vendors line the sidewalks, college students stroll along, and all the trappings of development are apparent. Inside, the restaurant’s staff roams around in a hurried pace, a steady drone of chatter fills the air, and all the trappings of a Binondo diner are apparent. But linger a little bit longer and the differences set in; it’s a lot less hectic than the Philippine capital, the odorous durian assaults your nose, and the language is Bisaya, one I’m a bit familiar with but cannot fluently speak. I’m actually in Davao City, the economic and cultural hub of the Mindanao Island, as well as the country’s largest city in terms of area. It was in 1994 when I first came here ... read more

Again, work brought me back to Mindanao twice this year. This time, I was able to traverse the Davao River five times just in 1 day. Also, this is my only travel that in five days was able to visit the Five Provinces of Davao, Davao City, Davao Del Norte, Davao Del Sur, Compostela Valley, and Davao Oriental. Davao Region is famous for the exotic Durian, which I learned to eat after going back and forth the Region. My favorite is the Pomelo, which Davao Oriental is famous for its being juicy and sweet. Compostela Valley is where most of the Gold Mining sites are located and beautiful falls, but the travel is a challenging one. Not because it's not safe, but because of the rough road and rugged terrain. Davao del Norte is ... read more

We spent a night at Iloilo city, one of the most developed area in Philippines. By morning flight we went to Davao, quiet boring city. Our hotel ‘My Hotel’ is at a busy street and the day never ends as if they were working, shopping, eating in three shifts. We had difficulty in sleeping. The first day we visited several shopping centers and spent most of our time at Victoria Plaza for purhasing pearls. This place may be an attractive area for pearls. One should feel that the sellers don’t cheet you. They are so honest and you can bargain to a very small amount. The second they we visited Samal Island (Paradise Island region) . We snorkelled at the corals and ate lunch by the sea. The next day we took a three hours bus ... read more

Davao isn't normally a tourist destination for foreigners (Lonely Planet barely even acknowledges it) but I wasn't going to let that stop us from visiting my good friend Pearl. It ended up being super fun and a perfect intro to the philippines. Our flights to Davao were at ridiculous hours, but at least we made all of them. The first one left bangkok at 12:30 am on febuary 3rd, and was supposed to get in to manila at 4:50 am (1 hour time difference = 3 hrs 20 min flight). I barely slept on the flight because they kept turning on all the lights for some reason. It got in to manila 30 minutes early. Hooray! 30 more minutes to sleep on the benches at the airport. Our connecting flight left manila at 8 am, and ... read more

flight from Manila to Davao took a good hour and a half and I slept right away. Arriving just before 6pm as we stepped out of the tube gate the 1st thing I notice is the strong smell of durian, welcoming me to Mindanao!! The terminal is nice and clean, after picking up my backpack I came out and waited for Olan outside, not 10 minutes later he showed up, 1st time meeting is always awkward but he right away made me feel at home, he is my 2nd Couch Surfing host. he has his own car and he immediately showed me around the city by night going through neighborhoods, the main drag, the bar area, what i noticed is they have their own version of jeepney, its much smaller and I thought immediately, my backpack ... read more

The security that is actually here, on site, is quite good. We often have a uniformed securty guard with a shotgun, then we have 2 plains clothes ex-army guys with hand guns that shadow us everywhere. We also have a squad or two of Philipine Army who follow us around when we're surveying in the mountains. We had one incident where a landowner who had already agreed to let us survey on his land changed his mind, or wanted more money, or something. Pretty soon, all the army guys had surrounded him and sat watching him. We still had to stop working for the day and let the community relations guy settle it. A typical day on this job begins at 5:30am. We have breakfast at a diner type place attached to our hotel. Then we ... read more
