Legaspi City, Albay, Bicol (Sept 16, 2007) - the land of Mayon Volcano, the almost perfectly-shaped cone and the most active volcano in the Philippines. This volcano had recorded over 50 eruptions, the first on 1616 and the most recent last 2006. While on my way to Legaspi, seeing from the top, the lava trail is still obvious as this just erupted on the fourth quarter of 2006. I realized how cruel the eruption had been especially to the residents near it. Anyway, when we landed in Legaspi airport, I get confused as the baggage will only be picked up manually. You have to be keen if the baggage men already bring out your bags. At least the crews are strict in checking if you got the right bag unlike in other domestic airports. Good thing ... read more

Hi all, and I know....long time no hear from! I won't go into a lot of detail here, only to say first off, as we wrap up our project here in the Philippines, the remaining 9 of us in the Hands On house are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our friend and fellow American, Julia Campbell. Julia was somone who had touched each of our lives in some way, shape or form. She was a Peace Corp volunteer here for the past two years in the nearby "big city" of Legazpi. This is the place that for the first three months I was here, we had to travel to to get to internet, do any sort of shopping other than for mangoes or "Asian market food," or treat ourselves to delicious brownies at a ... read more

Still trying to figure out what I have been working on these past nearly three months that I have been in the Philippines. I have been on so many job sites and done so many things I never thought possible (ceilinging, anyone? More on that one in the future...), i just don't even know where to begin. ONe of these days I will just have to sit down and write a long short-story about life in smalltime Santo Domingo. To keep this one brief, please take a moment to go to our website, www.hodr.org , and view the current photos (under the photo gallery tab) as well as the 60-day director's report. There will soon be a 90-day report up as well, so please keep your eyes pealed. The most exciting news of the week is ... read more

I don't have a single clue as to how I am going to write this next blast. I aim to keep it short but knowing how much work has been getting accomplished and all the things I have done in the past 5 or 6 weeks since I have been here (7? I don't know, I have lost track...first week of January, anyway!), it will be nearly impossible to even START to explain everything that is going on here. I can't stress enough how important it is to go to the website ( www.hodr.org) and read the reports, review the FLICKR site with all the photos of us working (I can't access it here on these slow computers so I have absolutely no idea what kinds of shots are on there!) and if you are able, ... read more

Hi all, blast number two from the Philippines: Ok, I just read the 30 day report from our Operations Director, Marc Young, and everything I was going to write about is up on the website, at www.hodr.org so I encourage all of you to please go to the website and read what we have been doing for the, well, last three or four weeks! Tomorrow marks my third week here, and boy have we been keeping busy. I'm going to leave this one short, hoping you can please read the 30-day report (yes, you'll be happy to know, it IS shorter than MY "reports" :-) ) to see how busy we have all been. Mainly, I have been part of the tarping/ roofing crew, though I have spent time at the boat building project, the elementary ... read more

Good day! I keep forgetting how involved and time-consuming it is to do disaster relief work. It's physically and mentally tiring, but highly addicting at the same time! I just got to the Philippines four days ago after a glorious week in Chiang Mai. In northern Thailand, the weather was ideally cool, and quite refreshing coming from the more hot and humid days on the southern Thai islands as well as Borneo, where I spent a little over a month staying with some local friends. Sure I filled my days doing STUFF and THINGS, but to elaborate on them at this point just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Besides, I have a feeling there will be little time to access emails in the next few months, and not to forget that just getting ... read more

Ahhhh…. So where was I, Boracay I believe. Well, Boracay is the most popular tourist destination in all of the Philippines; to me that makes it so much less desirable but I had to go. My primary reason of going was to go to the immigration department there, which turned out to be a desk in the tourist information center, for a quick and easy visa extension. Yes the beaches were beautiful, white sand and clean water (in some areas), but completely overpopulated with tourists. I’d say Koreans and Pilipino were the majority of the population coming for a quick activity filled vacation with the whole family. There were many things to do from Para sailing to diving and everything in between, now if you could afford to do all these things it would be ... read more

After updating my blog on Friday evening I had dinner at a restaurant down the road from where I was staying. I only had a taco as I was still pretty full from my pizza at lunch time, there was a trio with a female lead singer and they were quite good so I stayed for a few hours and enjoyed a few beers. Saturday morning I checked out of the hotel, they only charged me for the one night even though I was there for more than 24 hours. A tricycle took me to the local bus station, the bus for Naga was just leaving so I jumped on, to get to Legaspi I had to change to another bus at Naga, no problem as the conductor looked after me. The trip was pretty slow ... read more
