TOday we hired a minivan and bussed our asses down the Khyber Pass. After the initial hassle of getting our permits we picked up our armed guards (who were actually shorter than me!). And set off. First we drove through the smugglers market where the store windows are filled with A47s, rocket launchers and heineken. Standing under the concrete arch which marks the beginning of the pass was pretty surreal, and soon we entered the tribal lands. Outside we passed the refugee camps full of Afghanis in their mudbrick homes, children playing the dust and the colourful local string beds for sale on the roadside. The landscape was stunning: winding roads through rocky passes, forts dotting the hillsides and goats and donkeys grazing on the little grass that grew. Wherever we stopped we attracted the attention ... read more

It's been a crazy few days. I think I may have eaten and drunk more than one the whole trip up this point! We have sat on the road and drunk spiced kava with the locals, and dined at Fancy Pakistani buffets with the ex-pat crowd. We've had burgers and pizza and icecream, and hunks of meat cooked in a wok from a guy who couldn't speak a word of english. We've played countless games of volleyball, danced our asses off looking like toga-clad munters, and spent lazy days watching cable. We've caught up with old friends, made new friends... and scared the cleaner (Corb didn't know anyone was in the house and went to find a drink in his boxers!). THe old town is really cool - a rabbit warren of backstreets where the spices ... read more

Thank you for all of your wonderful comments regarding my photos and journal entries. The photos posted on the previous Blogs are unretouched photos. I used a simple 4.0 MP Pentax Optio, pocket size digital camera. For this Blog, I toyed with some enhancements. Again, these are photos taken by me from the trip and I have made a few adjustments with Adobe Photoshop. Enjoy!... read more

Hello our Canadian Friends & Family!!! We are happy to report that we are safe, sound and fully showered! This past week Galib and I volunteered our time to assist at Camp Chitta Batta, an earthquake affectee relief camp due to the earthquake that occurred for 20 minutes and killed over 240,000 people on October 8, 2005. 7.5 million people were displaced. These past 5 days have been an unbelievable adventure for the both of us to say the very least. Galib & I have seen the unthinkable, the unimaginable, the unmentionable...we have many stories to tell you. I will attempt to convey some of them on this Blog through my comments and the pictures. United Pakistan began with the vision of one person and the collaboration of many. We have been blessed to meet so ... read more

Tafton itself is a very dry place with nothing interesting. I was at the back of a double cab with another Pakistani guy. The cab suddenly stopped without fuel. The driver went off and came back in a car with can of fuel. I saw him paying the car driver with Iranian Riyals. To see at the border area, since fuel from Iran is so cheap they buy the fuel from across the border. The area looked pretty deserted. The geography of the area is such that, its amazes me to think that all this was a part of India at some stage. This area doesn’t look like anything that I have seen in India. Not even Jaisalmer. ... read more

The border immigration opened in the Pakistan side around 9am. At the border people were burning plastic cans to keep themselves warm. I guess the Pakistan government should run an Environmental Studies 101 in this area to make people aware of the harmful effects in what they do. Since there was no queue for foreigners like in the Wagah border I was put in front. All the while my backpack was resting on the Iranian border wall; I kept watch from the Pakistan immigration queue to make sure no one was putting anything. I think have got quite paranoid of this whole drug trafficking route hence, worried that people will put something in my bag. Exiting Pakistan was a breeze; as usual the officers have a laugh at my unusually long name. It’s a funny site ... read more

Quetta - Tafton The bus was supposed to leave at 4pm but it finally did at 5pm. I guess I was a part of the delay as I had to go back to the exchange place and come back. The bus had rice or floor bags on the floor and everyone walked over it. I guess this is how they conserve space in the baggage area. I had sufficient space and since I had an aisle seat I managed to put my legs out, the guy next to me, I am so glad I wasn’t there he was all cramped up. There was insufficient light to read, pretty bored. We had one piss stop and then a dinner stop. The dinner stop was quite cool, you go inside this building and everyone is seated on the ... read more
