Clean Up in the Morning
Still smoldering in the morning, Darren and Neeedish one of the orphans from upstairs grasping the enormity of the night. Geo: 28.3949, 84.124
I awoke to the sound of our pump kicking in and commotion upstairs. It did not sound too good so I jokingly asked Darren "Do you think we need to evacuate" Rather annoyed with me for waking he slowly climbs out of bed, gets dressed and heads out the front. Comes back two seconds later saying Yes our house is on fire. With that I leapt our of bed, got dressed, threw on both our money belts containing passports and am out the front door before Darren has a chance to tell me “Don't Panic” Seriously what part of the house is on fire should not result in panic.
We have a couple of Nepalese orphans living upstairs and smoke was billowing out of their room. It is the one house but they live upstairs with a separate entrance via a stair well.
Darrens version of events…. Lisa shakes me awake and asked if I knew what was happening upstairs…. Well I simply said… I do not know… really how could I given I was just asleep.. so begrudgingly I clamber out of bed with the intent of giving them a mouthful about having a party so dam late…As I ventured
out the front to my surprise there was smoke billowing out the side windows… no visible flames but plenty of smoke.. so given the bottom part of the house is a concrete structure i scooted back inside and informed Lisa that the house was on fire but there was no need to panic…. Well panic she did…
I had, put on my bright orange and yellow happy pants so given these were the only thing I had that resembled CFS PPE off I shot upstairs… The sight was daunting… smoke billowing out and clearly one room involved with fire. The smoke layer was just over half way down the walls so I initially was hesitant to just run in. The occupants were madly scooping water from the roof top tank which is located above the room that was on fire and running in and simply slashing it about.. I had my head torch on and crouched down and entered the room where I could see the back of the room was stacked high with stuff on fire… Shit.. so splash water around was the best thing to do.. The smoke was intense, hot and extremely difficult to breath so I got
Darren still in CFS PPE
Carting out Burnt Furniture. Lisa to get my face mask that we use on the bike and in I went with my happy pants, mask and night vision…. Why the night vision well Lisa had a good idea the room was dark and smoke filled and the hot spots showed up nicely as white areas through the viewfinder. In out splash splash and all was seemly okay.
Apparently one of the chaps there was using a mosquito coil and it caught his discarded pant on fire.. which caught the sofa and the crazy thing was he was sleeping in the room on fire and his mattress had also burnt right up to where he was laying… No one got burnt so they were extremely lucky. Nobody bothered to call the fire fighters because it would have taken them too long to even front up let alone spray water. And even funnier is none of the neighbours even stirred.
Whilst Darren and the two fellas who were sleeping over tackled the fire I took the two kids downstairs and attempted to stop them shaking. They were clearly in shock as I think we all were really so I got the rescue remedy out and demonstrated how to use knowing it would help regardless of the fact I could not tell them what it was for. I then made very bad Nepalese tea (the English approach to drama) as I think I was shaken also. Eventually the fellas came down satisfied the fire was out. All those Tuesday Nights at CFS training proved to be time well spent. One of them had lost quite a bit of hair and we stood in the bathroom checking nothing else was burnt. They were so lucky to get out it was crazy.
