We spent the morning wandering the alleys and streets of Thamel. Occasionally stopping in one of the many organic coffee shops (a throw back to the hippy visitors in the 1960's and 70's. Ed was particularly interested in a waterproof North Face bag/rucksack for when he starts secondary school in Seotember. We bought some A3 handmade paper, the only paper we could find, so that Ed and Hat could make 'Bob and Tom' welcome posters. To escape the noise we walked to the Garden of Dreams. A walled garden created in the 1920's, it was a oasis of calm and the crazy to-ing and fro-ing on the other side of the wall seemed a long way away. Ed and Hat enjoyed the freedom and, after walking around the grounds and Lily pond, Cas and I retired ... read more

The visas at Kathmandu were very smooth and we were through to the taxis within half an hour of landing. Cas had arranged a taxi via the guest and the journey to Thamel district gave an insight into Kathmandu life: chaotic, energetic, noisy, colourful, run down. There were bits and pieces of rebuilding damage still being done following the earthquake in April 2015. It turns out that the houses that fell were made with bricks stuck together with mud. The guest house, De Veda, was along a small alleyway and we'd booked two rooms with three beds apiece. Cas was not too pleased with the hotel as it was a bit shabby, but we decided to stick with it in the end. There was no aircon or lights until 6.30pm as there are severe electrical shortages, ... read more

Si nous ... read more

Back in Kathmandu, life felt a little surreal. We had survived our flight back from Lukla and I was now sharing in the comfort of a decent hotel room with Rebecca and Adam. The mountains seemed so distant. We were in the land of plenty in the bustling Thamel district. Shops, food, entertainment, cars, tuk-tuk's, people - they were everywhere. Our first day back was one of complete indulgence. We didn't have to walk anymore, but we still walked many kilometres all around our district. Rebecca was leaving the following day, so she was on a mission to buy all sorts of souvenirs and crap. Adam still had an extra day but also needed a whole bunch of crap. We stopped often to eat all sorts of stuff. We bought beers from the shops, and enjoyed ... read more

This was supper tonight. prosciutto and funghi pizza, bottle of Mt Dew (terrible) and bottle of water. It was about the same size as a Caseys large pizza. It was 880 rbs, plus 88 service charge, plus 125.84 tax, so ended up being 1092.84 rbs or about 7 dollars.... read more

The building next door, being redone, but in the meantime there are close to 60 people living inside it. Kind of standard, you find where ever you can to live. Some of those working here in this hotel live here, went downstairs this morning early and they were sleeping on the couches in the sitting area, and in the little dinning room.... read more

Well I think I am finally here. Long trip, longer night last night. No power, no internet, no umm nothing in my hotel, I decided to get another hotel today then, after booking, and going to 4 different motels, finally found the one that i had booked at, and again no power. Normal here, they dont have power between 10-14 hours a day. but today wont matter too much, tired, no sleep last night. Dogs started barking at 11pm, stopped barking at 4:15.. think I am almost asleep, and at 5 the crows wake up, so that is all you hear from then on. The traffic is bizarre, it seems like there is no right way, wrong way. No sidewalks, so people walking in the streets. You go down the road and watch as cars are ... read more
