Top of the world. Heading to Nepal, we were most excited about seeing Mt. Everest. I was not aware that Kathmandu would turn out to be such a charming city. The people were very friendly, even without introduction. The mood is laid back but the people we met were worldly and intelligent. But this blog is about Mt. Everest which is 29,000 feet. Mt. Shasta which is in California where I am from is about 14,000 feet. We took a flight along the Himalayas that lasted about an hour. We flew from Kathmandu along the Himalayas until we reached Mt. Everest, and then flew back. It is without question a big peace of earth. We expected that, but it was the mountains around Mt. Everest that surprised us. Mt. Everest just happens to be the tallest. ... read more

Thank god we bought our warm clothes as at 5.00 it was freezing. Bring on the thermal underwear!!! Our taxi drove us to the airport where our flight was due to take off at 7am. It had been suggested by our hotel that we should get there early to get the best seats, Tim did not want to be over the wing so he could get the best photos, everyone is guaranteed a window seat though. The airport had not opened so we waited with everyone else for someone to let us in - some poor people were in shorts!!! Eventually they opened the doors and we went to check in. That done we sat in the departure lounge for what seemed like an age. Then flights started to get delayed there was heavy fog outside ... read more

Well, I finally got to see some high mountains by booking the Everset flight at the last minute, so the weather didn't know I was going as my name wasn't on the ticket and consequently it behaved itself! I did have my doubts though, as it was very misty first thing in the morning (5.45am). We sat around for hours and hours at the domestic airport waiting for the visibility to impove and when we finally took off (11.50am!) it was still murky. However, as we rose above Kathmandu we suddenly got above the layer of smog into clear blue skies and sunshine. We flew with Bhudda Air in a small 18 seater plane, so everyone got a window seat. The four of us who went from our trek were all in the back seats which ... read more

Happy Birthday to Me! Whilst at Kopan I celebrated by birthday. A present from my parents was a morning Mountain Flight around Everest. And wow what a memorable birthday! Waking up early to catch the morning flight was not difficult because I had hardly slept for excitment. I was kept company for the flight two friends made at the Monastery - Cornel and Ricardo. We took an early morning taxi to the domestic airport and boarded a small plane (me slightly nervously as at this point I remembered I don't like actually getting into small aircraft but knowing I was going to see the World's Highest Mountain made it less daunting). Hey and for once there was issue over getting a window seat with this little aircraft everyone has a window seat and an aisle seat ... read more

Contrary to the info in Lonely Planet, the flights are happening during the end of the monsoon...good that we found out in time to do it - this flight is the nearest a middle-aged asthmatic is ever going to get to Everest, even if the plane was smaller than I even wanted to think about - all of 16 seats!... read more
