Summary in English: We decided for a side trip to Tilicho Lake after few rest days in Manang. However we woke up to the country covered by snow after the 1st day hike to the lake. As the hike to the lake has some dangerous sections it was unable to cross in snow and we had to continue to the pass instead. We headed to Yak Kharka. We had enough time. So we didn't hurry and allowed ourselves good acclimatisation. Thanks to this we could spend a night before the hike to the pass in the High Camp we no problems. We reached the Thorung La pass without any big problems. However there was a terrible cold on the way to the pass. And behind the pass it was very windy. The countryside was very dry ... read more

HI All Hearing from me a bit earlier than you and I might have thought! EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Almost immediately after my last entry, I came down with a combo stomach/bowels disruption which needs no further amplification other than to say that it caused me to fall behind "schedule" by a day or 2 and lose some energy as well. After a quick reassessment I decided I should be very happy with completing the Annapurna Circuit and should leave the Sanctuary for another trip! A couple of days diversion for the infamous (in Nepal!) Poon Hill views and yesterday ended 15 days of trekking back in Pokhara. I have been treating myself royally in the last 24 hours since returning to civilization (?). Just flew into Kathmandu today where potential strikes/violence appear likely!..hahaha..some things never change. Off ... read more

When we told Rindi that some friends of ours had trekked the Himalayas, she was very excited. The trek was going to be the highlight of her visit to India and Nepal. She had a lot of ground to cover in India. So our trek was just 3 days. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. We reached a maximum height of 2100 meters. Our route: Nayapul, Ghandrung, Landruk, Devrali and Phedi. We saw Annapurna south, Hinchuli and Fish tail on our trek. BTW, Rindi is ecstatic because she has discovered the secret after 62 years. Men in Nepal and India could not keep their hands off Rindi. She says she will let you in on the secret for a small fee. Things to remember next time if trekking in lower elevations of ... read more

October 19, 2009 I"m sitting here in Toronto...having just checked the Kathmandu weather for today....high of 97 degrees!...most people are really surprised that it's that warm....it's at about 4500 ft of altitude but at the same latitude as Jacksonville, Florida! Dreading the long flight to Bangkok tomorrow. Flying via Tokyo to Bangkok on Aeroplan so can't complain! Leave 1:15 pm Toronto time on October 20 and arrive in Bangkok October 21 at 9:30 pm..Thai time. Flying Air Canada to Tokyo then Thai Airways to Bangkok. The next morning I fly to Kathmandu again on Thai Airways which is about a 4 to 4.5 hour flight. Arrive KTM 12:30 on October 22nd. It's been 18 years since I was last in Nepal. There's been a bunch of political upheavels in Nepal involving the Maoists which has resulted ... read more

It was only a few short steps across the Friendship Bridge from Tibet to Nepal, yet the change in faces, personalities and culture was dramatic. We wandered with the crowd down a narrow lane way. A taxi-tout pointed us into a building where we were supposed to get an entry visa. After 20 minutes, a few forms later and a quick temperature check for swine flu (with a thermometer you stick under your arm), we were APPROVED for a 15 day visitor visa. Excellent! We then organised a lift to Kathmandu in the back of a Land Cruiser. I think we paid over the odds for this, but we did manage to acquire the whole back seat to ourselves. Rumour has it around here, that they sometimes fit 11 into the jeep so it seemed to ... read more

Day 9 - Ranipauwa to Jomson 2761m This was a long but easy trekking day, most interesting things were the land changes. Having gone from tropical near the start of the trek to more arid land, and then into the snowy peaks, we had headed over the pass and into the worlds deepest valley (oh yes). Basically a complete desert land due to another set of Himalayas blocking the natural weather. Massive wide rocky river basin for monsoon season but being middle of the their was a feeble trickle to begin with. Lots of fossils in the riverbed (evidence of evolution people!) but i couldn't find one, sob. My feet had now begun to fall apart pathetically, previous day had pulled the skin into a large blister and the back of my left foot which when ... read more
