Greetings again readers from the wonderful island of Maafushivaru – it’s still beautiful weather here, sunny with a nice light breeze and the outlook is much of the same… Welcome to my winter! Hope those in winter ski seasons are getting plenty of snow… And those in the UK are checking Google for trips to see me on Maaf… Come on guys you know you want to… You may remember me saying that Gordon the baby gecko had bailed on me – well we think he may have moved into the room downstairs… Marie, who lives below me has said she’ll look after him but Ron, her hubby, wants to charge him rent so I reckon he’ll be back with me soon… If he doesn’t come back there are plenty more geckos to choose from… This ... read more

Hello again from the beautiful Maldives… Hope everyone has been well and having fun since my last blog – it was only ten days ago – how quickly time flies when you’re having fun in paradise. The day after the last one it rained here on Maafushivaru (and other islands too I expect…) and with the rain came an abundance of marine life… right to our doorstep – which out here is actually the jetty! After breakfast a considerable crowd had gathered on the jetty as several reef sharks were swimming about – personally I think they were sheltering under the jetty so as not to get wet… Sorry, bad joke… There were also quite a few little ‘Nemos’, some parrot fish and various other ones whose names I don’t really know – yet, but I’m ... read more

In fact, at its highest point, does not exceed more than seven feet, while the average stays at five. So there is a good reason to worry about rising sea levels in a climate change scenario. Moreover, recalling the aftermath of the tsunami of December 26, 2004. Its three hundred fifty thousand inhabitants are distributed in 1,196 islands grouped into 26 atolls. Less than two hundred are inhabited, immersed in a tropical climate that rarely drops below 25 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Allah was generous to the people of this Eden. On arrival at Male International Airport which is situated on one of the islands of the Maldives, we were smoothly transferred to a nearby seaplane port for our 30 minute flight to Vilamendhoo Island. There were a number of 18-seater DeHavilland Twin Otter Seaplanes waiting at the port but ours was delayed so we had a little wait before we boarded. It had also started to rain heavily whilst we waited to board but luckily it eased off before we took off. Once on board the seaplane quickly glided across the ocean and we had tremendous views of numerous little islands, as well as a clear view of the capital town of Male. We were lucky as the seaplane transfer gave us an amazing perspective on the atolls, islands, reefs and lagoons as we flew low ... read more

Here we are on the final day of Fun Island. Not my name for the place, I'm guessing it must have been one of the first resorts in the Maldives, and they were looking for something to catch the english tourists. That being said, it has been fun here. The resort itself is rather spartan, but all we were looking for was white sand and clear, near 80F, water. I was telling Penny the other day, if anyone asks her about the water temperature, tell them its about the same as the feeling you get in your shorts just after you pee in the ocean. Not the relief part, just the heat part. This place is loaded with Russians and Chinese. There have been a few other nationalities, but for the most part, that's been the ... read more

Here we are, the focus of our travel, the birthday! It has been a long journey to make it here, with a short stop in Paris, but we can finally state we have arrived. One might think that this is the focal point or height of the travel, but looking at the details we realize that it's just another of our steps before the eventual goal is realized. What is that goal? Well, it's still a mystery to Penny. When we arrived here yesterday, it was spilled quite quickly that we would only be here for a week. So, once the 14th arrives, we are on the road again. Where to, anyone's guess but mine. So, yesterday, once we changed out of our Paris gear and into something more atune to our climate; then we wandered ... read more

At the end of our last entry, it was just before midnight when we arrived in Doha. We had gone to the transfer area and Penny had found out that we were not going camel treking in the desert near Doha. But, she did not know where we were going. When we found our gate, the first screen we saw for our destination was in arabic, so we just kept walking for a washroom, and our destination was still a mystery to her. After the bathroom break, we headed back to the screen area and saw that they had begun boarding the plane. As we got closer, Penny noticed the english part of the sign. A very priceless look, I did see a lot of happiness there. So on board we got and it was a ... read more

Spent a great evening yesterday watching the rays in the ocean. There was a Whiptail Stingray and Black Blotched Stingray swimming together and tussling for food. The Whiptail ray also had traveller fish attached to it incredibly this fish stayed attached even in the tussle for food. This was followed by watching the guys place buoys out for the Dhonis moored up in the lagoon and then they enjoyed an evening of Maldivian cricket on the beach followed by yet another lovely sunset.... read more
