Dad and I decided Kyle shouldn't be having all the fun on this island adventure. He is going diving everyday, coming back with wild stories and photos of exotic looking sea creatures. If you know us at all, you know that we are not about to put our faces in the water, let alone go under water. So, we found a water adventure that was a little more our speed. We hopped aboard a submarine and followed the coral reef of our island underwater, but in an air-conditioned, private cabin. It was actually a lot of fun and we saw a large variety of fish--more fish than we could identify. They were all different colors and sizes and, in a way, almost looked fake they were so vibrant. We took some photos of some of them ... read more

Earlier in the month Kyle was focused on his bucket list item of running the NYC Marathon, but now he is focused on his dream SCUBA diving trip in the Maldives! When we originally thought about traveling to India, the goal was just to find a good place for Kyle SCUBA dive, but after further research we realized it would not be too much extra effort to get him to a top notch diving destination by adding the Maldives to the end of the trip. And once we heard that Kyle had it on his bucket list, we could not resist! So we showed up at Lily Beach in the Maldives with one goal: great SCUBA diving for Kyle. Kyle showed with an even more narrow goal: swim with whale sharks. (This is not to be ... read more

We visited the small fishing village of Mahibadhoo which was about a 45 minute boat ride from our island. It is home to 2,000 people who are mostly muslim. The island is so small, you can stand on main street and see the ocean to the north, the ocean to the south, the ocean to the west and the ocean to the east. The primary industry for the people of the island is fishing. The village, colorful and quaint, is untouched by tourism. It was a quiet and down-to-earth visit in contrast to the luxury of our island resort.... read more

It wasn't a short or easy trip, but we have landed in the Maldives. We left India on a little prop plane and landed in the capital city, Male. There we got a sea plane transfer which dropped us in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Luckily a boat was waiting for us and took us to the island of Huvahendhoo. Needless to say, it was worth the hassle. Here we are, in paradise. The noise, grit and crowds of India seem like a million miles away as we are surrounded by nothing but palm trees and clear blue ocean waters. Having a husband who loves to SCUBA diving has it's advantages. It is a sport that typically involves tropical locals, the dive centers usually partner up with a grand resort and there is no expectation ... read more

There is no question one of the things we love the most about aa overseas trip is the opportunity to slow things down and observe the world. When we travel, we have the chance to sit back, breathe and actually savor moments like meals or coffee breaks. We are able to set the pace so that we can drop everything for high tea or just plop down at a cafe to chat and soak in the surroundings. If doesn't take an expert in human behavior to deduce that we really like to enjoy our meals. Yes, we like food. We like the process. We like the novelty of new foods. We like the comfort of good food. We like the culture of meal times. And, yes, we like the consumption! Kyle likes to joke that dad ... read more

After my Greece and Turkey trip this August, I didn't think I would go anywhere else until the rest of the year. I was wrong. I could not resist the temptation of joining my friends to go for a seven night live aboard in Maldives. How could I say no to a 45 meter, four deck yacht? After a great difficulty in getting clearance from work, I flew to the capital city of Maldives, Male, on October 4th evening and met 16 other divers who came from Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines. Once landed at the airport, we were introduced to each other and transported by a dhoni, local wooden boat, to Maldives Princess, was a beauty! It was spacious enough for the 17 of us with a proper living room, a bar, a dining room ... read more

After an incredibly relaxing first day on the island, where we had loaded up on breakfast, snacked on granola bars for lunch, and eagerly awaited dinner, we were ready for some fun. For dinner, we each wore a dress and had a happy hour fruity drink. Then we walked to the pier to take some photos and just love the idea we were in this incredible place. Dinner the second night was not as good as the first, but it was still good enough. It had rained intermittently during the afternoon, but we were still so happy with the weather - we had been told that it would rain and thunder every day. That night, however, the sound of rain against our roof woke us all up - it was absolutely insanely loud! I, of course, ... read more

For the Eid holiday, my friends and I decided to make a quick trip somewhere. The Maldives was chosen finally after much deliberation and we were able to get a good deal for three nights and four days at the Holiday Island Resort. I had no idea where this was. I tried to look it up and there really is very little information out there about the Maldives, even though almost everyone who goes loves it. I guess not as many people have been fortunate to experience this island paradise, and so I encourage you to try it before the rising seas have washed them away. (Despite your beliefs in man-made vs nature, the sea level IS rising, regardless of the reason). Jamie and Joevet were coming from Abu Dhabi on Qatar Airways. They met me ... read more

Hello to you all from the beautiful island that is Maafushivaru – it’s been getting on for a couple of weeks since I blogged so I hope everyone is keeping well – stay safe in the floods all of you in the UK and my snow bunny friends… stay safe on the slopes! It’s been one of those weeks, busy but fun, and no matter what happens you just cannot knock life here in paradise… but as soon as I get back to the UK I need a dentist… I had a temporary filling before I came out here and I think it’s now gone, in fact I know it’s gone – along with half my tooth, there is definitely a big hole where my tooth should be – hoping very much it doesn’t start to ... read more
