Nine years ago we wrote ‘Kuala Lumpur is Knockout Lovely’. Well, it still is! KL is a vibrant, bustling, noisy, cosmopolitan city and we love it. Getting here was somewhat taxing but that is all part of travelling. We left Hampshire at 17.20 on Sunday and twenty two hours later we arrived at our little hotel in Chinatown in KL, at 22.20 on Monday, which would be 15.20 GMT (seven hour time difference) and 16.20 CET at home in Spain (six hour time difference). Why such a long journey? Well, true to form, we arrived in a major tempest which is how we usually manage to arrive in foreign parts! Last time we flew in to Singapore, for example, lightning struck and moved our bus on route from the airport! This wasn’t quite so dramatic, however ... read more

After leaving our quiet island retreat we have arrived in Kuala Lumpur , China Town. A complete contrast! Noisy, dirty streets instead of sandy paths with barely anyone on. Locals bustling about with strained faces instead of big smiles and greetings from local islanders. Its all part of life's rich tapestry! We spent just one night here, eating out on the famous Petaling Street , the heart of China Town followed by a morning visiting the more peaceful gardens at the Petronis Towers. Only after walking g through a huge, modern indoor, air conditioned shopping mall. Again a huge contrast to the little kiosk shops on the island selling only 3 in 1 coffees and biscuits. From K.L. we fly to Krabi, end route back to meet up with Sharon and Scott and the kids on ... read more

Kuala Lumpur means monied estuary, and that’s why locals call it KL. When language is an effort, non sequitirs are accepted without a follow up question. Sort of like when we were on a tour through the mansion of a 19th century Chinese big wig and the guide said of the central room open to the sky, “This is an area that we refer to as an area.” I had to write it down. That aside... Our stay in Malaysia is low key as I continue antibiotic recovery and day trips we had planned are set aside for future visits. The big (as in both enormous and compelling) attractions are the Petronas Towers. For a few years, these were the tallest towers in the world, though are sliding on the downward spiral on that score, for ... read more

Enroute from the airport, my driver gave me the shortened history of Kuala Lumpur, while I was taking in an amazing, sprawling, modern city with the Petronas Twin Towers, prominently, in the distance. The British became interested in Malay for East India Company plying the India-China maritime route. They established their first base in 1786. During the British rule, they built roads, schools, buildings and cities. They also brought rubber & palm trees from India along with Indians to plant plantations. They also discovered ore & tin & opened up many mines, hiring Chinese to operate the mines. Malaria was a huge threat to the workers & many perished. In 1957, the British gave Malay it's independence & the country of Malaysia was created. Over the years, Kuala Lumpur, the capital, has grown into a major business ... read more

We needed a break from beaches and cheap stuff so whats the most expensive country in the world to live In. Well singapore claims that dubious distinction for itself. Flying out of Cambodia was only a shock in that we left a 3rd world airport to land In probably the most modern airport in the world. After a somewhat slow immigration we were off by taxi to the Park Avenue Rochester hotel. Very nice rooms. But no free breakfast. No big deal as we were within a block of dozens of eateries. Also one block from a major MRT station with two different subway lines. These subways are amazing clean safe and fast. Only 5 or 6 minutes between trains. Just look at the colored map on the wall pay your 80 cents and get on ... read more

From Koh Lanta we booked a van down to Penang in Malaysia. The journey was around 12 hours in total and it was our first overland border crossing. Other than a Thai bloke getting the hump with us for questioning why he needed more money of off us it all went pretty smoothly. When we entered Malaysia we didn’t really expect to stay there as long as we ended up doing so as we kind of thought we would be there for a couple of weeks and then head across to spend some time in either Indonesia or Phillipines but in the end we made the judgement that our budget probably wouldn’t stretch that far and we felt like we would be trying to cram in too much in too short a time. I’d been to ... read more

We arrived in Kuala Lumpur and easily found a tourist bus to take us to our accommodation near Petaling Street, in Chinatown. We had chosen to get a private room in a hostel but as a double bedroom was too expensive, we got a bunk bed! The hostel isn't very nice but it is quite clean. It was 4pm and, as we hadn't had a proper breakfast nor lunch, we were quite hungry so we went to a Food Hall. We couldn't understand most of the food names so we opted for a fairly safe chicken fried rice. We took ... read more
