We've been to KL a few times before so a couple of nights stop over on our way to Brunei left us looking for something a little bit different to do. It began with a busy arrivals hall at KLIA2, the second terminal at the International Airport which is dominated by the operations of Air Asia. Of course the terminal had been in the news very recently after the assassination of the half-brother of the leader of North Korea. We hadn't even considered the possibility of any lingering nerve agent and so we passed happily through. It was nearly two weeks later that the authorities conformed the terminal was toxin free! KLIA Express is a high speed train connecting the airport to the city centre in just 28 minutes. Add on 5 minutes for terminal 2 ... read more

So we are OFF on our third Asia trip travelling together, first stop Kuala Lumpur via Amsterdam. Skyscanner produced the most bargainous flights ever - £309 return with the lovely KLM, with only an hour transfer time in Schipol each time. We couldn't believe it! I realised this time that last time my insurance wouldn't have been valid as I was way over the 31 days allowed on my annual policy. Whoops. Rookie error! Phoned up this time and extended for £14. That would have been a VERY expensive mistake. Incidentally, I was surprised to find very few people blogging this year. Apparently there's a bug in the system, so I'm going to publish this and see if it shows up anywhere. So no actual travel done yet! Testing, testing.......... read more

En kveld tok ... read more

Da er vi på farten igjen. Denne ferien er planlagt for over 6 mnd siden.

After a very smooth border crossing, we drove into Malaysia. And what a breath of fresh air it was. Lots of lush fields and space. Houses look good and gardens well cared for, and not much rubbish in evidence. Not sure our mini-bus driver took the shortest route, but we eventually arrived in Georgetown on Penang island. Wow what a lovely place. The old colonial town is being regenerated with street art and maps showing where the traditional crafts are still being carried out. It was a shame we only had a couple of days there, and it is certainly a place I would like to come back to. And then on to Kuala Lumpur, the bustling capital. We are staying at the back of one of the massive shopping malls (what a shame!). Until the ... read more

18th Jan: I enjoyed my hostel breakfast out on the balcony looking out over the mountains behind Ipoh. I got chatting to a guy who had been staying in my dorm, we booth commented on how we liked the chilled out vibe Ipoh has going on. I was really jealous when he was telling me about travelling to Thailand in the 80s, and how beautiful and different it was back then. I really wish I could time travel. I almost didn't make it out of the hostel because when I got to the bottom of the stairs the metal door was locked. Luckily, there were some keys in reception so I could unlock the door. It took about ten minutes to walk to the station and I waited for my train, which was on time. The ... read more

Back to Kuala Lumpur! This is not the first visit for neither Tanya or Tiffany...and for me, it is easily over twenty visits to the Malaysian capital. One thing is sure about Kuala Lumpur, hotels are some of the cheapest in the region. Imagine that 60usd gives you a night at the Imperial Sheraton. You count on the fact that we always receive a nice upgrade...that we have access for three of us to the lounge for breakfast...and that from 5pm to 8pm, it's open buffet and open bar at the lounge...I guess this is cheaper than my backpackers years some twenty-one years ago for my first visit to KL! Oh, and I forget, they even gave us some free laundry. So the deal was not only to spend time in our comfortable suite or being ... read more

La même chose ... read more

After a fifteen hour travel day that involved a taxi, two planes, two buses, and a lot of walking I made it to my destination of Kuala Lumpur - the capitol city of Malaysia and my 14th country in the last ten months of travel. My first impressions were of that it was similar to Singapore with a large cultural mix of different ethnicity including Malays, Chinese, and Indians. Also arriving here their were a lot of tourists. I was no longer one of the few white people around and no longer the novelty I was in Indonesia. The city itself would serve as a fun enough place to explore and would be my backdrop for ringing in 2013. Of course before the big night I had a few days to kill exploring and getting my ... read more

Well its been a while since I last updated the old blog as I've not been on any long trips due to moving house. In my fantasy world that was all going to take a couple of months and off i'd go but in the real world it took nearly 18 months. During that time I did manage a ten day stint in Malta which I really enjoyed especially Valletta. I also took a couple of weeks in Southern Spain starting in Malaga, which was much nicer than i was expecting , before taking the train up to Seville......fantastic if you've not been go. Spent much of my time in the tapas bars near the cathedral eating myself into obesity. Last stop Granada where it snowed as i arrived!! Mind you it was February. Got a ... read more
