We arrived at Kuala Lumpur feeling rather exhausted but excited that tomorrow night Dad, Deb and Jordan would be meeting us here! We walked to Chinatown and after a lot of searching found the fern loft, as recommended by backpackers we met in the Cameron Highlands, and checked into our first dorm of the trip. We slept pretty much all afternoon and in the evening Jeff, the guy who works at the hostel, cooked us all food on the rooftop and we sat drinking, eating and playing cards – and the boys had a little ‘chilli off’ – never seen so many grown men crying at a time!
The next day we slept in late and had intended on seeing some of the city and possibly visiting the indoor theme park. We ended up sitting on the rooftop all day playing cards until 5pm when we decided we should probably head over to the hotel where we were meeting the family!
We checked in to the Citrus Hotel and settled into our comfy room waiting for the others to arrive. Compared to some of the places we had stayed in, this was heaven. We were waiting patiently for them
to arrive and when they did an hour later than expected (the hotel failed to send the booked taxi to pick them up) we did the hugs and catching up before taking a walk around the area stopping for some noodles at a little street stall then some more Chinese food at a delicious little street side restaurant. While Deb and Jordan headed to bed the two of us went with dad for a drink down the street from our hotel and ended up sitting with three old Chinese-Malaysian guys – Yap, Wong and Lim. Although only Yap could speak English we enjoyed a couple of hours chatting away and drinking beer with them.
Our first day in together in KL was spent by the pool relaxing and playing cards followed by an evening trip to little India for a yummy spread of curries served on banana leaves. On the way back we all stopped off to see Yap, Lim and Wong and this time there was a new guy – Chin – who seems to be top dog.
The following morning we failed to get up for the Patronas ticket queue as planned (apart from Deb A
who got up and showered before realising everyone else was still in bed!) so by midday we were on our way to KL Bird park which doesn’t sound that interesting but actually it’s a must in KL. You can get really up close and personal with many species of exotic birds feeding them from your hands which is pretty cool. By now it was getting late so we headed off to central market where the two Debbies and Jordan shopped while the other two sat drinking coffee and moaning about how much the girls like to shop!! We had a quick fish spa at an amazing 5 (£1) ringgits for 10 minutes then set off to Chinatown for dinner and more markets 😊.
We had yet another late start the next day (we really are not good at getting up early any more) and took a taxi to the PETRONAS towers and visited the discovery science centre and the aquarium. We headed to the Skybar at Traders Hotel initially with the plan for a drink but decided whilst up there that we were way underdressed for the occasion so took some quick photos of probably the best view of
the towers in the city and then swiftly left.
On our last day before our flight to Borneo we went to the craft complex and made our own batik pictures which was fun. Later that evening we headed to the KL tower. We expected a lot from this but felt a little let-down by the views – especially for the price. Our tickets included entrance into a little zoo downstairs which was not anything special – in fact all the animals were in tiny cages and looked a bit sad.
we got a McDonalds delivery for dinner – that’s right, delivery! – and aimed for an early night but ended up with no more than 2 hours sleep before we had to get up for our flight to Sandakan!
