7/11/08 = Lake Gardens and the Animals
Woke up late because of artificial darkness of room. No external windows, so hostel people decide when morning when they turn corridor light on, usually around 9. Not v.bright though, so slept through it. Got ready and went for Hop on bus = 24hr ticket, so had until midday to get where needed to be. Got off at train station first to buy ticket to Singapore - had to get it a day early because had sold out. Then luckily managed to get on bus even though ticket had expired and got off at Lake Gardens. Really nice place. Didn't do Bird Park or Butterfly Park to save money - headed straight for Dinosaur Park = free. Few good things about being small - 1 is that can play in kids park with no shame! Played on bridges, slides, climbing frame and swings, and was all good because no children in sight! Like a private park! After good 10minutes playtime, went to get a drink ion cafe. Boiling hot and constant feeling of thirst here!
Went to walk round lake then. Really pretty, but with Hilton Hotel and Meridian directly behind it.
Us in Lake Gardens
T-shirts on ladies...take note! Really gutted about Deer Park - lady on bus had told us that all deer been moved to zoo, so park closed. Tried it anyway...and really good job we did. She had totally lied to us - I've never seen more deer together in one space! Unbelievable. Had tiny, palm sized Mousedeer, which were in cages but really cute. Then had loads of deer roaming in a field next to us. Went to walk over bridge to see them and that's when noticed monkeys. Monkeys roaming completely freely in trees and everywhere; sitting on bridge, eyeing us up suspiciously! Love monkeys, but after all stories and photos of monkey bites, did feel a little indifferent! Sudden flash of Billy Goats Gruff story came into head, with goats trip trapping over trolls bridge (always scared me as child). Didn't know if we were brave enough to do any trip trapping past these monkeys! When a few scuttled off, we plucked up courage and walked quickly over monkey bridge without looking back. Deer were worth it though. Love deer, and were just right next to us. Checked for another exit, but only exit = back over monkey bridge! Bit of psyching self
up, then quickstep over, only to be greeted by even worse creature. Taking photo of a stag, when Deb noticed a baby crocodile slip into drain next to us and then slide off down a drain hole. Unbelievable...and happened way too quick to catch on camera! Walked out of deer park amazed by sights, a little shocked, and with quite a few glances over shoulder to check for Mummy crocodile!
Headed for National Mosque then. Unusual building - not dome roof like a normal Mosque, but closed umbrella roof. Interesting to see and looked like one of Robin Hoods disguised men as walked round. Walked home after that and to Chinese Market again for night. Went to Reggae bar for a drink - first cocktail had in a while, but went down well. Then shared some Chinese foods. Guy came round and tortured us with a really hard magic trick - hate puzzles! Managed to do it once by sheer luck; Deb seemed to get the hang of it. Home and bed after that.
8/11/08 = Last Day in KL
Woke up after dodgy nights sleep and stomach not so good. Were supposed to be heading to
Batu caves just outside city, but after packing up, decided was a little late, so went to explore city some more instead (wrong decision!) After 20minutes in main centre and shopping district were completely bored. Wondering round a city with no money but lots of things you would like to buy is definately not fun! Plodded back with nothing else to do but catch train later that night. Chatted to people for a while, then headed out for food to Reggae Bar. Couldn't face chinese or Malaysian food on dodgy tummy. Went to post postcards in postbox and ended up checking out Central Market. Quite a cool place - bit like Corn Exchange. Lots of little stalls, not too crammed and nobody called me 'lady' or 'miss'. Determined to spend remaining money, looked around, bought few cheap bracelets and then the fish man caught us (no pun intended). Had seen fish spa's around but not been brave enough to try them. Cost less than 1pound for 10minutes, so decided to give it a go. One of funniest things we have done! Sat on stool and looked at fish that were about to nibble all dry skin off our feet. Fish
The Monkeys
Guarding the bridge...no trip trapping here! have never looked so scary as they did at that moment! Took a few minutes before brave enough to put feet in and were in for no longer than 1second before screamed and pulled them out again. Repeated this procedure at least 20times until half of time had passed with me intermittently dunking my feet and screaming! Didn't hurt - not painful at all. Not quite ticklish either - really funny feeling - feels like it was really: small creatures nibbling at your feet. As soon as you put feet in they were round you. Laughed, screamed, chewed hands and bit lip through whole 10minutes of it. Had an hysterical few minutes when a dutch lady sat next to us - she just laughed the whole of the way through it - really infectious laugh! Pool soon filled up but most of fish seemed to stay around us - feet in such bad condition I think! Brilliant experience, but glad when 10minutes up. Feet softer, but face aching from laughing and squealing.
Headed for train station after that and got yet another overnight train to Singapore.
Phone working again now bought new charger - results here:
Miles: 7.6
The deer
Worth the risk of the bridge... Steps: 17,468
Calories: 464
(but I'm sure I've read somewhere that laughing is good exercise, so it's probably more calories than that!)
