We’ve had our fair share of “pets” in our rooms over our years of travel - big hairy spiders, flying cockroaches, rats, and even a scorpion - but we’d never before had a snake, until Kapas. But I’ll come to that later. For now, I’ll start at the beginning. The island of Palau Kapas is a little Island just a 15 minute boat ride from the mainland, but a world away. It’s somewhere Scott and I have both visited in the past, but in our BK (before kids) days, when travel was a lot simpler. It consists of a string of white sand beaches backed by swaying palms and dense jungle, interconnected by a series of concrete walkways, each beach a little quieter than the one before. The ocean is clear and many of the beaches ... read more

In the morning, we stand next to the freeway trying to flag down a car to take us to Marang. After a few minutes, another foreigner couple arrives, backpacks and all, at the bus stop on the other side. After we give each other the evil eye, an unspoken competition starts of who'll manage to secure a ride first. At least we're not going in the same direction. I remember well the old local ladies in Montenegro sneaking in front and stealing my rides. Eventually, a car stops for us. The friendly man, who we can't communicate much with due to language issues, drops us off at the bus station in Kemaman, where we take a local bus to Marang. The reason we went there is to catch a boat to Pulau Kapas. From the harbour, ... read more

It was sad to leave China, a country we had greatly admired, but we were excited to be continuing our travels.  We flew from Gunagzhou to Kuala Lumpur happy to be all flying together this time after the previous flying trauma. Check in was a breeze in the relaxed airport and soon we were sipping our last cups of traditional Chinese tea. However we enjoyed it so much that we underestimated the length of Guangzhou Terminal and ended up running to the gate as Air Asia gave their final call. Flying has not been easy recently! It was nice to return to KL having been there after we left India in January. Our amazement, after three months of dusty Indian cities, at the huge shopping malls and fancy streets will always be remembered, but, having been to ... read more

Since our last blog entry we flew back into Malaysia and spent a few days in Kuala Lumpur before then taking a 7 hour bus journey to Kuala Terengganu. We stayed one night in Terengganu (having the most amazing food in a local ’kitchen area’ which cost hardly anything!) before hopping over to the stunningly beautiful island paradise of Pulau Kapas which is just off the east coast of Malaysia. After much reading and deciding I (Andy) came to the conclusion that I would like to spend my birthday on Pulau Kapas which is an unknown to both of us and also seems like the perfect place to relax and spend a week over my birthday. After getting up early and leaving the hotel in Terengganu we got to the Jetty in Marang and hopped onto ... read more
