Well technically we're back in Miri right now but we were still in the National Park this morning............... So, 4 days of jungle fun to catch up on. Here goes. Thursday we left Miri and took a 30 min flight to Mulu in the heart of Gunung Mulu National Park. We met our guides and fellow travellers at our hotel on pick up in Miri, the other travellers were a Malaysian family from KL - mum, dad, 3 sons and one son's girlfriend. They were all absolutely lovely and a pleasure to travel with, just the sort of people you're happy to spend a few days with. Mulu seemed hotter and stickier than Miri, if that's possible. We flew on a small plane, the airport was tiny but all pretty efficient. We got a minibus to ... read more

"You don't come to Mulu to see animals" was the first thing our guide said. My face visibly dropped - so to stem my disappointment he followed it up by saying "but you're in for a real treat in terms of insects." I would certainly not consider myself a lover of creepy crawlies - in fact quite the opposite and I was kicking myself for not doing better research but since you have to fly to Mulu we were committed to spending Christmas there. Ironically the lack of mammals actually turned out to be a positive thing as our time became about enjoying the jungle instead of straining our eyes to find some elusive creature. Mulu also boasts some of the world's most impressive caves which makes it five star resort for bats who when not ... read more

MASwings sei Dank!

Cities don’t hold much of an attraction for me unless they boast history or culture. Kota Kinabalu has neither. But although it’s modern and perhaps a little soulless it’s still a pleasant enough stop-over after a long flight. I managed to catch up on sleep, visited the night markets and food stalls and admired the sunset from the marina. And after a couple of days I was ready to move on. Next stop: Mulu NP and its famous caves. I remember the first time my friend Peter took me caving in the Yorkshire Dales. After a strenuous walk across the moors he suddenly pointed to what I had assumed was the entrance to a rabbit warren. “Here we are” he grinned and before I even had a chance to utter a doubting response Pete had already ... read more

After the River Cruise i flown to the Mulu Nationalpark near Brunie. The last 2 Days in the Jungle. The NP is spiked with Caves and Mountain Formations. I slept in the NP Headquarter for 3 Euros. I want to stay 4 Days in the NP, but the Girls from the reception lost my Reservation-Mail. Because of that i have to change my Flight bookings. Thank you NP Staff :( I visited all the Caves on one Day. The Nationalpark includes the biggest Cave Chamber in the World (200m high and 1,8km long). You can't imagine how huge is this Chamber. On the ceiling you can see two big "Donats" with Bats. In the Cave living 2-3 Million Bats. Every Day you can see the Bats flying out of the Cave between 1730 and 1830 (only ... read more

At the drop off point we started our long 8 km walk towards camp 5 with us is this talkative British woman who never shuts up, even when walking in the forest, the 3 of us were getting annoyed already. It started drizzling but we are inside the forest canopy so we did not get wet totally. The scenery is nice, a few bamboo trees along the way, we crossed 2 suspended bridges to get to the other side of the river. We got tired quickly because of the heat, and humidity, it seems a kilometer here is longer! About 3 hours later we arrived at the camp, ohh we passed the Japanese group along the way, they seem very friendly. Joseph one of the guides living on camp 5 sorted us out, showed us our ... read more

Sharing a taxi with a young couple staying in Dellenia GH we set off to the Miri airport, 20 ringgits between the 3 of us, check in was smooth, the plane ride is about 30 minutes to get to Mulu , and do some jungle stuff in the National park. The luggages took awhile to get unloaded, meanwhile I asked around for Diang which Mrs. Lee from Dellenia GH recommended for homestay, the park HQ dorms are fully booked! So I asked this lady at the taxi counter, turns out it was her, Diang told me to get in the van after I take my pack from luggage claim area, with me are 3 history teachers from KL, 5 ringgits for the van shuttle to the homestay which Diang owns, it is quite simple, no fuss, ... read more
