9th June - So me and Tim flew to Kuching, on the way we purchased duty free supplies of vodka and whiskey in case of emergency. We arrived in Kuching, really pretty town, we found this great guest house called Barambih Lodge, really good place, smallish and great staff. Nice bamboo air con lounge with lots of cushions and big TV and DVD player. Small kitchen and nice clean rooms. Cheap too.
We met a great irish guy called Dave, he's from Limerick, really good guy. We walked along the river and stopped for a drink at a restaurant/bar on the river. We sat there for a while, then i went back to the guest house for a shower and left Tim with his jug of beer waiting for me to go back. Well, he is australian.
So I went back after a shower, we had another jug then went for a dinner at a restaurant - plastic tables and chairs job - i didnt really like the food so Tim ate mine and i feasted on overcooked white rice. Then we wandered back to the guesthouse. We met up with Dave again, and some others - a group
of 5 from london. Tom and Sophia (couple), Joel and Caz (couple) and another Tim. We cracked open our drinks and we all had some drinks together in the lounge. We watched football (Euro) and had a really good night. A lovely group.
10th, We hung around with the others decided to spend a couple of nights in Kuching as we have a great group and great guesthouse. We were introduced to some new drinking games! that night, we went out for dinner at a Lebanese place Dave had found, had falafel and houmous, really yummy, then we went back to the guesthouse to play drinking games. We played Ring of Fire, up on the upstairs balcony. It was very funny, and we got ridiculously messy. We also watched football, i think til about 5am or something like that. It's a very funny group and we had a real laugh. The photos say it all.
11th, spent time with the others again, We blagged our way into one of the big hotels here, and used the swimming pool - sunbathed and swam, then it poured with rain later on -strange weather here - so we had some drinks
(i had hot chocolate you will be surprised to know).
we decided to book up together and go for 2 nights to Bako National Park, its a jungle place with wildlife to spot. We got the bus together, its about 40 mins away, and then you get a boat across the river to Bako. Its situated on the coast and is absolutely beautiful. So that night, we played Ring of Fire and Fxxx the Dealer, (i am of course shocked and appalled by the names of these unruly games and apologise to the delicate ears that may be reading. well - you know wot i mean!). So, another night of shenanigans, football, music, laughter and craziness in the house til some silly time in the morning. Oh yeah, we went out for dinner at a brilliant food court beforehand, Tim and I had a 1.1kilo red snapper between us which was delish and some veggies. Cheap and lovely. The others had really nice steaks and chips.
12th and 13th
So we got the bus and boat (crocodile river!), and arrived at Bako Park. We did an hours walk through the jungle to a beach, it was really beautiful.
We saw lots of macaques and some probiscus monkeys too. The ones with the big ugly noses and bellies. They look a lot like irish guys apparently. oh and and some boar roaming through the lodge. We swam in the sea and loafed about on the beach before heading back to the forest lodge. There is also a shop, cafe and seating area. We watched football of course! and had beers and dinner, which was surprising nice. Then me Tim, Tim, Dave and Joel went on the night safari. We basically went up a trail in the dark with torches and heard some scary monkey noises but that was all. It was kind of fun, then we went back and had some beers! We stayed in two lodges, me and Tim and Dave shared a room, very nice accommodation - good shower and bathroom in our lodge too. Very nice and cheap! We also met up with a dutch couple Tristan and Luna.
The next day, Me, Joel, Tim, Tim and Dave did a trek through the jungle, Tom, Sophia and Caz stayed on the beach and sun bathed. We trekked and found an amazingly beautiful beach - we
just were absolutely gobsmacked and everyone got out their cameras and totally papped the place. We saw it first from the cliff view point and then climbed down to the beach. We had a swim in the sea which was warm as a bath, its very hot too and sunny! Then a boat man turned up and we arranged to go back in the boat so we could see the coastline. Really gorgeous! Great day indeed.
So that night - we ate again and you guessed it, played drinking games! we had loads of fun with the locals and we all bet on the football - i joined the locals on their side and we had hours of fun. Our side said that if we lost we would show our bottoms! Luckily it was a draw! we all bet one ringitt each - last of the big spenders eh! It was a hilarious night, and then there appeared a guitar and we attempted to sing, altho nobody seemed to know the entire lyrics to any songs! i also cant sing but groan very loudly in a dull voice. Well, i enjoy it so thats the main thing. arf. I
also danced with the locals. For some mad reason - Tim (English Tim) and I were the last up as usual and at 4am decided we were going to do our own night safari and set off along a trail into the jungle to look for probiscus monkeys. all we had was Tim's phone for light and i dont know how we didnt fall over quite frankly. We waddled along in the dark and then sat for ages listening - but funny enough, didnt hear a darn thing. We waddled back giggling, and i think i sank into my pit around 5ish or something like that. Tim and Dave were snoring, lovely.
14th - checked out of Bako by 11am, Tim had lost his wallet on our previous nights intrepid foray into the jungle, but luckily one of the park workers had found it on a trail and he got it back. We're just so wild.
We got the boat and bus back, and back to Barambih Lodge where we got our old rooms back! We got tooled up for an evenings drinking games and spent the night listening to music and playing Ring of Fire. We were joined
by a dutch guy, Marco that the others had met before, and an american ornithologist called Fred, with an eye twitch. Fred was ok but when he got drunk, was extremely annoying (to me) and was going on about how american culture is everywhere and other bollox and so i told him to shut up a few times apparently. We watched football again of course. Joel and Caroline were leaving at 6.30am the next day for a flight, we said some very sad goodbyes, and Joel seemed to end up with his genital area in Toms face. It all got very manly bonding type thing, altho Dave doesnt remember a thing about it this morning! We all decided we were going to meet up again in Limerick one day at Dave's place! Really funny night. Again. Again, Tim (English) and I were last up at 5am with Tom and Sophia.
We intended to go out for the day to the orang utan rehab centre today (15th) but didnt arise til 1pm, so we're gonna have a quiet night tonight and make sure we do it tomorrow. The others are leaving in a couple of days so we have to
do some stuff now! That's the plan anyhow - wonder what tonight will bring!
