The Journey around Borneo So we flew from Kuala Lumpur into the city of Sandakan of the far east coast of the province of Sabah in the Malaysian part of Borneo. We had nothing finalized but knew that we wanted to do two main things in our week here, dive and mountain climb. Things began to fall serenditously into place and we headed first for the south coast of Sabah and the world famous dive destination called Sipadan. A short taxi ride took us to the long-distance bus stop in Sandakan so we could catch a bus to Semporna, the main town near Sipadan. We thought we might have to take two buses but were immediately greeted by a man who said he would take us all the way to Semporna. Our ride....a broken down jeep-like ... read more

The boat made its way down the channel in the inky darkness toward the site we would be visiting for our night dive. We had already had our briefing while at the shop getting kitted up. As we near our location our dive guide Rory scratches his head, turns to us and says “Now that we are on the boat there is just one more thing I should mention...there have been crocodiles sighted while night diving in the channel. It’s best not to flap around on the surface, just go straight down.” Heidi enquired as to whether she might take a big stick with her. Unfortunately big sticks don’t mean much to 4mt estuarine crocodiles accustomed to taking down buffalo from the water’s edge. What we hadn’t yet been told was that many of the divemasters ... read more

(Day 447 on the road)From Brunei, we decided to take the overland (read: hitchhikers) route to Kota Kinabalu, or KK as everyone calls it, in Malaysia's eastern Sabah province. This turned out to be a little more complicated than anticipated and involved a total of seven different cars (and more than six hours on the road), all taking us a little further towards our destination. Still, as always in Malaysia, hitching was easy enough and we never had to wait longer than a few minutes for a car to stop. Plus we were riding with a few real characters again, amongst them an ex Brunei-Army helicopter pilot and a friendly Chinese family with three kids on vacation. Kota Kinabalu (KK) however was nothing more than a stop-over point for us on our way to the world ... read more

We arrived in Semporna after the 10 hour journey from KK feeling a little stiff and a little bewildered but the sweet receptionist from Billabong Divers was waiting for us at the bus station to take us further into town not far away. We got a short glimpse of town which is not really very appealing. It's a pretty rough place and not exactly what you would expect inviting you to one of the top 10 diving locations in the world! Anyways, our guide brought us to a clean and simple guest house above the Indian place down-town for us to spend the night before heading out the next morning to dive at Pulau Sipadan. Up early we grabbed our stuff and paid up at Billabong and after a bit of a wait we walked down ... read more

The difference from SCUBA diving and snorkelling was truly realised here. It had been 10 weeks since my last dive but Palau Sipidan is worth the wait. I arrived not really caring where I go. I just wanted to dive. The main reason to go diving was to do wreck dives in Philippines. So before getting there I wanted to improve my buoyancy etc. So I decided to do an advanced course. Palau Sipidan is in the top 10 dive sites in the world so it’s an expensive day normally. But I scored myself a bargain for the second time in a week. Normally needing to pre-book, as there are limited spots available. I ended up getting the Advanced course for 32% cheaper by combining the course with a Sipidan trip. The southern area of Sabah ... read more

What a way to start my Blog, on such a negative foot. No, I don't think it has to be negative, but the way its going, things look very bleak. I speak of the many waves of illegal immigrants that have struck the shores of Sabah and her islands. Many of these Immigrants of not much more than social refugees, exiled from their own countries by poverty stricken circumstances. They're only salvation lies across the border, within the safer zone of Malaysian waters. These rich environments hold for them, the ability to lead long happy lives. But at what cost? Over population, unemployment and crime is rife. The Malaysian government actually supports the landings just as long as the people worship Islamic faith. the government has actually been known to hand out citizenship status to these ... read more

Hej igen!!
