After my failed Mount Kinabalu attempt, it was time for something more relaxing, so I planned to go diving at Sipadan Island (one of the best diving sites in the world) and chilling out a couple of days and celebrating x-mas at Mabul Island. I first heard about Sipadan Island from my friends Patrick and Marije, who also got me into getting my PADI diving license. They were at Sipadan last year and came back with rave stories. Something that can't be missed, if you're a diver, and in Sabah/Borneo. To dive at Sipadan Island, you need to book ahead. Only 120 people a day are allowed to dive around the island, and there is no accommodation. A few weeks ago, I booked a 6-day package, where I'd be staying in Semporna for 4 nights and ... read more

Caitlin and I easily would have stayed longer in Kalimantan if we could have, but our 60 day visa had run out on us. So we opted for the next best thing and hopped on over to the Malaysian side of Borneo. "Hopped" is probably a poor word choice. Inter-Borneo travel, particularly on the Indonesian side, is difficult. The quickest route in the end was to take three separate flights, from Kalimantan to Jakarta, then on to Singapore and finally back to Tawau in Malaysian Borneo. Sort of a circuitous route, but the only reasonable option. Two months ago way back in Bali, our scuba instructor had laid out a map of the best dive sites in and around southeast Asia. At the top of the list was a place called Sipadan, which Lonely Planet also ... read more

well I've done a bit of diving here now, still have a few days left but have a rest day today, and lets face it there's not a lot to do here in Sempourna when not diving apart from sleep and eat, so I'm doing both along with some travel updates :) I have now had a couple of dive days with scuba junkies (whom I am also staying with in a dorm room, the cheapest but also the best way to meet other people). The first dive day tipped down with rain and involved a boat trip out (around 1-1.5hours) through very choppy waters to a place called Bohayan, the diving itself though was pretty spectacular which kind of made up for the freezing, wet surface intervals between the dives (huddled in the boat trying ... read more

We only had one morning, three dives, at Sipidan. In many ways it was a disappointment, after all the hype, but also in many ways it was really impressive. What we did see, the coral, the fish, the sea life, was quite spectacular. The weather that day didn't make it an easy set of dives. The sea was pretty choppy and the currents underwater were strong in places. This didn't help with spotting the sea life, or with getting on and off the boat. Between dives, we were dropped off on Sipidan island, for a hour each break, and that wasn't fun in the rain. There is a toilet block, the remains of some old resort buildings, an army house and lots of open space. We were given food during each break, soggy fish sandwiches, hard ... read more

I'm behind on this travel blog, but I'll catch up soon. A couple of weeks ago we went to Sipadan--which is one of the top ten places in the world to dive—according to the scuba powers-that-be who determine this stuff. And the diving there IS amazing, partly for its variety and partly for the amount of stuff passing before us at any moment. So many sharks swam by I started looking around for some sea slugs to see something different. What also made this part of our trip so wonderful is that we stayed on an old oil derrick for four days, called Seaventures, converted into a dive shop and hotel. It’s just so cool to be staying in the middle of the sea and to take an open-air elevator down into the water. Now, I ... read more

Dives and cuddles in Sipadan, welcome to Kapalai resort! I've dived in many places in the world...and quite often people come back with the same question...have you dived Sipadan? Up to now, the answer was always...not yet. So now it's done, we just spent 4 nights at the Kapalai Sipadan resort. In terms of diving, Galapagos, Palau and Tubbataha are still way ahead for me, but Sipadan do come in fourth on my list of places I've dived. We stay at the Kapalai resort...and this is an out-of-this-world diving resort. The staff were amazing, you are taken care so well it's impressive. The place has 60 bungalows all built over water. If you are single...do not come here...if you won't dive, snorkel and are not in cuddles, do not come here. But if you look for ... read more
