From Sipidan it was back to the rig to get our gear ready for the transfer back to the mainland. We had one night in the town of Semporna to wait for an early bus to Sepilok. We took the advice of some other people from the rig and stayed at Lee's Guesthouse, very quickly and successfully negotiating the room price down from the listed RM70 to the generally paid RM50. There is no challenge in that kind of negotiating! We failed to find a laundry that could get our clothes washed and dried quickly (no mechanical drying aids!) but did manage to find ourselves a nice cafe with a balcony and breeze (mechanically aided!) So there we sat, luxuriating with hot chips and cold beers, trying to identify fish pics, and generally relaxing. Its strange, ... read more

En route from the Kinabatangan to Sepilok the bus passed a few oil palms by the side of the road. And by a few I mean a few million! Malaysia is infamous for replacing forest with oil palm plantations but until you actually see it first-hand you really can’t grasp the problem. And even after seeing it its still impossible, like trying to imagine the Universe. The biggest plantations seem to be owned by the Sime Darby company. I’d passed one in Sarawak that went on and on for tens of kilometres, and where-ever roads cut through it you could see that it kept going back to the far distant hills beyond. The one by Kinabatangan dwarfed that one though. We drove through it for what seemed like forever. At a petrol stop overlooking the landscape ... read more

A side note for those wondering about the blog title...as Sandakan is where we flew into, we just couldn’t resist a reference to the Clint Eastwood films from the ‘80’s featuring Clyde the Orang-utan...and yes it does show our age! So we were up and at ‘em at 5am so we could get another extortionate taxi to Kota Kinabalu airport...we decided on the 45 minute flight versus the 6 hour bus journey as it ended up being the same price. Well that and because we had heard the road was very winding so with Donna’s tendency to get travel sick we really didn’t particularly fancy that journey! On the approach to Sandakan we saw why the bus would be a bad idea - it was mostly mountains, although it seemed to us that a lot of ... read more

what a whirlwind...... Since our last blog we have driven across salt deserts in Bolivia, trekked around Machu Pichu in Peru and have almost been part of a protest in Santiago. We have soaked in geothermal hotsprings with our friends in New Zealand and bumbled along the Sunshine Coast of Australia in a camper van. We sit now writing this from a hotel lounge having just arrived in Sabah Borneo from Japan. via Bangkok and a two night train journey to Kualur Lumpar and a flight to Kota Kinabalu. Non stop travel! We are pretty tired so are taking it easy for a few days and thought we would try and breath life back into the old blog. So: Japan On our first day we hit Tokyo running straight off the plane at 6am we dumped ... read more

... read more

After Adam’s trip to Thailand and mine to India, we met back up in Malaysia and have begun exploring around Malaysian Borneo. Jungly, friendly—and way more laid back than Peninsular Malaysia—we are loving it here. We first did a long house visit, which is such a must. Basically, this is a home visit with the Iban people where you stay two nights or more and do what they do. (And in case you’re wondering, a longhouse is a series of separate apartments that open into one long communal porch all under one roof that is, well, long. We wish we would have known that the best time to visit is first of June when they have their festivals, and it seems like a wild time: pig killing and in-general-debauching. We stayed with a spunky, bad-ass widow ... read more

15th March 2009 I had a terribly night; at about 3:00am my inner ear started pounding and became blocked and very sensitive. I think it’s been irritated by the snorkelling and maybe has some water and sand trapped in their. At one point I thought I might have to cancel today’s trip to Sandakan and on to the Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Thankfully when we met the girls (Monika & Hilary) for breakfast at 7:00am, Hilary had some very good eardrops in here medical kit. That with a couple of powerful painkiller washed down with two cups of black coffee and I was ready to go, all be it a little fuzzy. We first catch the bus from the Cota Kinabalu bus station to Inanam and then boarded a spanking brand new coach for our 6hr ... read more

Selam to everybody. We rented a car with driver from Semporna to Sepilok-300 Km( RM 260). We tried to make the way in six hours, but because of the two flat tires we were late . Fortunately we were able to catch the second feeding time 15.00 hours at the Orang Utans Reabilitation Center. The first feeding is at 11.00 AM. Out of this times it may be hard to observe the orang utans. Our driver Omar was polite enough , he waited us hours at the sanctuary. Then we drew to Sandakan 30Km. We spent the night at Hotel London (RM 65 B&B) and had seafood diner outside the town 10 Km away , Ocean King Seafood Restaurant . The next morning we travelled to Kota Kinabalu ( KK) by bus. ... read more

We made it to Borneo!!! On landing at sandakan we were so excited about seeing the orang-utan's in a few hours! Unfortunately it was absolutely chucking it down on arrival and we checked into the hostel all ready for meeting my genetic family!!! We drove over to sepilok so excited, luckily they sold dreadful poncho's we could wear and we waited for the beautifuil orange creatures to appear!! They slowly swung over the ropes into view and they were just breathtaking, they really are so incredible, and virtually the same colour as me!!! The photo's aren't so great as it was chucking it down and the viewing platform was quite a way off but we hung around watching them eat and chew the fat, we nicknamed the two that just sat scratching their asses at the ... read more
