It was a busy morning for me, as I had to attend to my guests at the breakfast terrace Pangkor Island Hornbill Restaurant, Pangkor Island Beach Resort, Perak. Good breakfast served. The crowd had a marvelous time and was very surprised and attentive especially for the children when we have the some unexpected guests arrived at our table. It was the Hornbills (Anthracoceros albirostris). Some guests even questioned the waiters, “Do you rear these birds? ". On YouTube, they were described as “brought in" from the Borneo Islands. To my knowledge, there are 10 species of Hornbills in the state of Perak as compared to the state of Sarawak, whereby Sarawak claimed the slogan as “The Land of The Hornbills” in which Sarawak state has only 4 species in its name. So I don't think it was “brought in” as claimed by visitors or tourists. The slogan should go to Perak state, unfortunately too late because of the discovery was made much later. Nevertheless, I am glad we have the Hornbills on both sides of Malaysia.
The one and only Hornbill found in this part of Pangkor Island is the Malaysian Pied Hornbills, black on their backs, wings and head,
white eye shadow, white belly, with beige color beak, can grow approximately 120cm in length and have a close relationship with the people here. Hornbills are relatively shy birds, but these ones over here I can get close to them from two to three feet apart, had great close-up shots from where I stood. They don't seemed disturbed or frighten of me but cautious as each step they made towards the crumbs I gave them. I can see their birdy behavior and expression. Just imagine I cannot see in humans but the birds. They hopped on wooden railings, on the grounds and flew from trees to roof tops, sometimes to the guests’ tables, awaiting your bits, a great joy to see these birds so close to people. I like the thought when the elder bird fed its young or his female partner. It was a touching sight, a tinge of caring ingredient in these birds which at this moment I thought to myself, I hope to see the same ingredient in the human race, not by lending hands, but their compassionate hearts too.
The hotel staff gave them leftovers of breads and cakes, some canned cherries twice a day,
mornings and in the evenings. Not only the Hornbills will be seen, there are other birds joining the feast. I may find this "not right" as I do not want to see these birds lacking in seeking their own natural food the natural way, which right food provide right diet, right? I hope these birds do not suffer diabetes or disorder in their diet. On the other hand, it was "good attraction" for the guests in most hotels, an extra feature that brought smiles to the guests and a good deed rendered by the staff of this hotel. Maybe "Waste-Not-Campaign" was the whole idea coming from the management for the benefit to both sides.
Where can we find big birds that frequent visiting the restaurant? Or has it become their natural instinct they know where to get their food the easy way? If you ever want to visit this hotel, maybe for a start, buy some seeds and fruits for the birds, would be a good idea after all.
