Teacher: I just found a new band and they share your name!
Me: Who's the band?
Teacher: Rotting Kris.
Me: Rotting Kris?
Teacher: Yeah, they're a thrash band.
Me: I think you mean Rotting Christ.
Teacher: Yeah, same same. Right? Hahahaha!
When I lived in the US and called in sick, I usually got a response along the lines of, "You're vomiting... so does this mean you'll be a few minutes late today? We still need you to come in."
Here, just feeling achy and lousy got me warm wishes, many suggestions to take a day off, and help finding my closest clinic.
And then the clinic gave me free medicine. I only had to pay a small registration fee since I'm a new patient.
This is a welcomed change.
Today at work, the students were learning about the sounds made by 'ue' and 'aw'. The teacher slowly had them repeat the sounds, "ue," "aw," "ue," "aw," and the students got quite excited about it and started having fun with it. "ooooooh," "awwwwww," "oooooooh," "awwwwww" ...
And then they decided to go faster:
oooh, awww, ooh, awww, ooh...
I struggled to keep a straight face.
I went to KL for the weekend and at my hostel was an older, eccentric Belgian man.
I started talk to him over breakfast and he asked where I was from.
"Minneapolis"
"The city of Prince. " he replied. "I just love him. His music. The way he dances."
"Hometown pride," I said.
It's hard to not like someone like him.
There's a little family run Chinese restaurant in town that I like to go to. They're always warm and welcoming, and the food is delicious.
Today I walked in and was invited to sit with Grandpa at his table. He smiles at me and continues eating. A few minutes later the mom came over to take my order. "Do you want the usual?"
I might have become a bit too familiar.
Tonight the gas can for my stove ran out, so I messaged my landlord to find out where to exchange it. After quickly assuring me he'd help me sort it out tomorrow, it became obvious he was very concerned.
He was
worried about whether I'd been able to eat dinner.
Vice Principal: This holiday I'm going to visit my family up north. what are you going to do Kris? Will you travel? You look very tired today.
me: I'm going to sleep. And sleep. And sleep. And sleep. Ha ha!
Very quiet vice principal who never says anything: I think she's going to hibernate.
Today I went to buy a dress for my friend's engagement. When I arrived at the mall everything looked closed. I came back an hour later. .. still mostly closed. I decided to ask the security guard where I could buy the suit and she not only told me, she came along to help! She, the shop clerk, and I went through racks of dresses and suits trying to find some that I liked. After a while she left to go back to work. When I left the shop I walked by her again and she insisted on seeing my new outfit. I think she's almost as excited as me!
