After leaving the Cameron Highlands we moved on to the Taman Negara national park, the jungle is amongst the oldest in the world. We stayed in a small village called Kuala Tahan where we could then trek into the jungle. The following morning we did a 2km walk to the canopy walkway which is made up of aluminium ladders and suspended by rope 40m above the jungle. The walkway is around 450m in length and is the longest of its kind in the world. The walkway gives good views of the surrounding area and of the tree habitat - unfortunately we did not see much but it was a great experience all the same. You know you're in the jungle when brushing your teeth makes you pour with sweat. It is so humid, in two days ... read more

27/09/07 The alarm went off at 5.30am and I finished packing using the smallest torch known to man. I walked along the beach to meet the others making the first footprints in the sand to find out that the long boat was leaving from my side of the beach. We all walked back and even though watching Chloe struggling with her car size backpack was funny I ended up carrying it for her. It must weigh about 20-25kgs! It was a sad occasion in a way since this was our last beach in Thailand. The sun rose over the cliffs to say good bye though as we were leaving. When we arrived on the mainland there were two old ladies picking small shells so Chloe and I went to investigate. We tried to help but for ... read more

We intended to send this blog from Myanmar. We had gotten up that morning, and even had a taxi lined up to go to the airport. Our flight was scheduled at 10:00 AM. We were sitting in our room watching the BBC, and saw that the situation in Myanmar was deteriorating by the day. 9 were dead, many Monks had been taken from the temples in the night and beaten and jailed, 6 PM curfews had been set, the government shut down the internet, and the 5 main temples in Yangon had been shut down. For those wanting a little background, the ruling junta in Myanmar raised fuel prices without notification in August. In a country as poor as Myanmar, this was met with anger. Last week the Monks in Myanmar were staging a peaceful protest ... read more

The proceedings of a thunderstorm had began so I sought refuge in a nearby pub. As I sat down in the pub I instantly felt that there was something wrong. I promptly jumped to my feet to discover that there were red ants festering in my chair. From nowhere I pulled out a tube of Nippon in order to defeat the infestation. This only seemed to make matters worse though as the numbers began to increase and a whole army of red ants began to emerge from within the vicinity of the chair. It got worse though, not only were the army of ants multiplying in numbers, they were also multiplying in sheer body mass, growing larger by the second until they were roughly the size of a six year old children. From this point on ... read more

Another planned trip took us to Gua Telinga the Cave Exploration deep in the heart of the rainforest. The group and I were totally unprepared for what we were about to discover. The rain had made the area very slippery and dangerous so guide provided gloves (as if they were gonna help!), via ropes we desended into the dark depths of the caves through water we walked upto our a knees at points. Then the guide would stop and show us something, a cave centapeid, nasty looking thing about 5inches long and poisonous so I hear. Then spiders as big as your hand, not dangerous but they leap at incredable distances, in our case right over us scaring a couple of dutch girls half to death. Under tight crawl spaces and through more water we wade ... read more

Here I am back in South East Asia at the beginning of another big trip, and within three hours of the plane touching down, I had already broken our first rule of travel: no motorbikes! From previous travels, we had run into so many people with various bandaged limbs which usually turned out to be motorbike related. Therefore, we have a firm rule that motorbike travel is to be avoided at all costs, that is until you hit Bangkok traffic! One of my first jobs upon arriving in Thailand was to take a taxi for the 20-minute trip to the hospital to get all of my injections for the trip. After 30 minutes of completely stand-still traffic, my taxi driver suggested that I change into a motorbike taxi and zip through the traffic if I ever ... read more

Journey to the Jungle We regretfully left the haven of Traders Hotel, abandoning half our luggage with concierge, and walked in the steaming heat to Crowne Plaza Hotel around the corner. After behaving far too British by patiently waiting while all the French and Italians pushed to get their names checked off, we were on the coach, which was thankfully cool and comfy. Our coach guide was a hilarious Chinese guy called Wong, with the most creepy long fingernails ever. He made the most dreadful gags during our journey - so unfunny you couldn't help laughing. He obviously thought he was a real comedian. We arrived at Kuala Tembling and had Chicken Rice at a small cafe, before braving the worst toilets in Malaysia. Most of the public toilets so far had been pretty good and ... read more

The following blog is dedicated to Miss Lynne Hughes. Lynne, what was it you called me all those years ago? We arrived in Taman Negara by bus early evening and checked in to a Guesthouse which tourists called 'The Yellow House', why, i think you can guess. It was painted bright yellow and ran by a name who we thinks name was Halim, he was the funniest man we have met to date. When we were introdused to him he of course asked the usual question of 'Where are you from?', Once we had told him Scotland he was on a roll, all the facts he knew about Scotland just rolled of his tongue, he knew more than me i tell ya! He was telling me about a country i have lived in my whole life ... read more

Couldn't resist a Young Knives title - the chance doesn't come up very often! We woke up early and got the coach with no problems. We arrived at the jetty site at 12:15pm, and waited for the boat's departure at 2pm. We had one hostel booked for the first night, and booked the second and third at a different place with the travel agent when we were waiting - regrets, we have a few! The second place was grim with the worst bathrooms I've ever seen, and out cold shower water ran out when I was rinsing shampoo out of my hair. This was after our caving expedition, so we definitly needed showers! I'm getting ahead of myself though... The boat journey was amazing. I'm not sure when I'll be on a computer with a usb ... read more

well the jungle ....... we went to the jungle of taman negara. it in the middle of malaysia and its a protected national park. the setup is that there is a small village on one bank of the jungle, with all (except for 1) the hotels/guesthouse on oneside, and to get to the jungle you have to cross the river to the otherside to get in. see the attached map picture i made. this also shows the various treks we did while we were there. so what did we do, first we decided we wanted to do the canopy walk, which i guess is the first thing everybody wants to do when they get there, cause its well cool, your basically 50+ meters up off the jungle floor on a suspention bridge which goes from ... read more
