It was early, it was cool, I had slept poorly and I had an insufficient amount of caffeine in my system when the shuttle van pulled into the parking lot. I put my bags in the back and climbed into the van. There were 5 people in the van plus me and the other guy who were just joining. One girl, a Malaysian girl named Evelyn, began asking us questions followed by talking in circles, joining questions, statements and facts. My oh my I thought only 6 more hours of listening to this girl, should be a grand ole day. As Evelyn yielded her travel advice, questions and random outbursts, the others got to join in. In no time the van was filled with laughter, smiles and a promise of this transportation becoming a positive experience. ... read more

Spent 3 nights in Taman Negara for 10 ringits a night (2 pound) and I must admit the hostel wasn't the greatest in terms of cleanliness, but had a good vibe in the evenings and the hostel owner and his friends were pretty helpful and fun. They would play guitar and sing some tunes that they know and a good place to meet other travellers. Hostel is called Ripple Hostel. Anyone wanting to do the canopy walk, you have no need to spend 35 Ringits that they try charging you outside the park as it only costs you 5 Ringits and is easily accessible without the guide and the trek to Bukit Teresek is pretty simple. The canopy walk was alright, parts of it were under construction so didn't last that long, but it is pretty ... read more

Travel Blog Day 4 Travelling to Teman Negara Nationa lPark We were up bright and early, had our Malaysian fried rice for breakfast and donned our backpacks (wow they feel very heavy!) and walked to the Crown Plaza Hotel to catch our bus. The bus cost 70 MRM each and arrived pretty much on time with our guide for the day, whose name was “Apple” on board. Nice air conditioned coach, but with no more than 9 people on board. Apple explained that there had been a problem with the original bus so we had a different bus and a driver that had never driven to Taman Negara before! The journey started well but we were disappointed with the scenery - just miles and miles of Palm oil trees in huge plantations! Not what we had ... read more

Hello all! Thursday 12th August - Perhentians to Taman Negara continued..... The journey to Taman Negara went quite quickly, mainly because I slept for most of it. The scenery gradually got more tropical and foresty as we got closer. It reminded me of somewhere, can't quite remember where though, might be Brazil. I was getting excited about getting there; it's another place in my 40 Places To See book. The forest got denser and the trees bigger the closer we got; there were short fat trunked trees that looked like palm trees. Maff saw a snake crossing the road. You could see a lot of evidence of tree logging, the lorries bringing the trunks out of the forest. We were dropped at our hostel in Kuala Tahan (the main Taman Negara town, it's so small though ... read more

Im Gegensatz ... read more

Today we arrived in Kuala Tahan, the little jungle wvillage in the middle of the Taman Negara National Park. We had a beautiful 3 hour long-boat ride this morning up the Tembeling River after a hectic day of travel yesterday! Yesterday we woke up early in the morning to pack our day packs (for the week) and to make our way to the Tanjong Pagar(sp?) railway station to catch the express train to Jerantut that I saw advertised on the net the night before, but when we got to the station, there appearted to be no train until 630pm that night, which would 1. mean that we would have to wait around Singapore for another day, 2. miss all the scenery as we would be travelling at night and 3. get into Jerantut at 230am!! Which ... read more

By 10 am we were on the coach and departing Penang for Kuala Lumpur, it seems that all roads lead there, I wasn’t thrilled but it was only one night. As soon as we arrived at the bus station in Kuala Lumpur I arranged my bus ticket to Singapore a few days in advance, on my return to the hostel I checked in and arranged a trip for myself and the Australians i met (Megan and Simon) to go to Taman Negara national park. I contacted Sam, the girl I met in Laos and invited her to join us for dinner, when we met up I introduced Sam to her countrymen and we went for dinner in Kampung Baru, a spot none of them knew despite visiting Kuala Lumpur, we went for a few beers at ... read more
