After spending a few days in a nice hotel in Kuantan, we've been herded to a resort an hour and a half away, down in Chini, right on the lake. It's a lovely, wooded location and I hate it. I've been living out of suitcases for a while now and I would have greatly preferred to stay in the nice place with the good location, where I've finally been sleeping, rather than be stuck deep in the woods with no wifi and poor mobile service. The scenic winding road to get it here is a deathtrap waiting to happen. But I also understand why we're here: this location is much closer to our schools than Kuantan—our driving time is under an hour instead of over. We left Kuantan around noon and headed south. Driving was much ... read more

It's been a busy and hectic week. On top of all the training and running around needed, I also managed to not get a full night's sleep. Ever. Waking at 2-3 am became the norm and I somehow managed to stay awake until 10pm the next night, unable to even nap. Worst time adjustment ever. But at least I managed to stay awake all day! Monday we three new mentors were picked up at the resort and whisked across town to company headquarters for training. The first day they went pretty easy on us and even took us out to lunch! That evening they planned a nice night out at a local country club type venue with great food and beers. It was nice to be social and talk about things other than my new job. ... read more

So at this point I realise that I am ever so slightly falling behind with my blog so I apologies for the rushed writing with this one. Real time, I am already in Australia so .. yeh. Enjoy! As I mentioned in my previous blog I was down in Kuantan, a lovely town on the south east coast of Malaysia. The morning of June 12th we had to wake at 7am to have enough time to get to the place we were staying. It was no alarm that woke me that morning though, but a recorded Muslim prayer being played over a megaphone in a nearby Mosque. The trip we were going on with a large number of Kish's family and friends was a two day trip to a large platform which was on stilts on ... read more

The Lonely Planet mentions a little place which is supposed to be the Malaysian equivalent of Loch Ness. And would you want to leave Malaysia without heaving learned about the lake monster? Of course not! Therefore, our way led us to Tasik Chini in the middle of nowhere. It was already quite a challenge to find our way there, since public transport is not always the easiest in this country. So we had to take two different busses to end up in a little village which was still not the place where we wanted to actually go. And the only taxi driver of that village had to pray when we arrived, which is nothing unusual in a Muslim country. But luckily, we found nice people who drove us directly where we actually wanted to go - ... read more

We arrived at Kuantan, our halfway point on the east coast, at 1540 hrs having covered just under 100 Km. We had planned to stop at a small town called Pekan about half way but the hotels were full or too expensive. There was a tourist resort just outside Pekan, but we didn't fancy staying at a Malaysian version of 'Butlins' so, as it was an overcast day, we decided to push on. Joy was really strong and for a change it was me that was doing all the whimpering. My saddle was killing me from the 50 Km point. I think that when I reassembled the bikes in Singapore I must have altered the position of the saddle slightly as it now feels as if I'm breaking-in the hard leather from scratch - thats my ... read more

My last trip to Taiwan was fulifiling and challenging as I was very much involved in the pre-trip planning process. However, once in a while, it was always nice to have everything worked out for you. And all you have to do is to just follow and enjoy the journey...... Where: Kuantan, Malaysia What: A Factory Visit Start: Friday, 12th September 2008, 8.30pm End: Saturday, 13th September 2008, 10.30pm Costs: S$170 (fully subsidised) About 7 hours drive from Singapore brought us to the city of Kuantan, the state capital for the state of Pahang (the same state for Genting Highlands). Located along the eastern coast of Penisula Malaysia, Kuantan and its surrounds boast beautiful shorelines and lovely beaches. Reaching Kuantan at about 3.30am, we did not have the luxury of time to linger around in the ... read more

It was the 3rd day of Chinese New Year... Enough of visiting relatives and bingeing on the new year goodies... We made out way to the Pandan Waterfall which was about 1.5hr car ride from Kuantan. Actually, my family had visited Pandan Waterfall many years back but I had no recollection of it at all. Heard the Waterfall was rather unkempt until a major clean-up not long ago. While driving to the Waterfall, my mum also shared her experience of visiting the place when she was young. Without proper roads and cars in the 60s/70s, the Waterfall had to be reached with sheer perseverance on foot. It was incredible that they walked like almost half a day to get to it from a bus stop on the main road. I could hardly jusify the walk was ... read more

The journey to Kuantan was a bit of an ordeal, the economy bus was somewhat lacking in luggage space so we had to sit with our bags, which aren’t the lightest or smallest. The bus was also over an hour late and the journey six hours. However it was worth the DVT for our luxurious junior suite at the Swiss Garden Resort and Spa. We had actually booked the cheapest room available at this hotel, but were gratefully upgraded. We have been taking advantage of the hotels facilities, despite the rain, which always seems to arrive when we check in somewhere decent with a pool! Eating too much western food (I had the biggest BBQ ribs I have ever seen) but we will be back to the local delicacies soon enough. The local Malaysian cabaret act ... read more

Our last two weeks in Malaysia have kept us busier than we have been in a long while; mind you it hasn’t been hard to do as we have been fairly slothful. We enjoyed our time visiting with Jo’s brother Chai and his daughter Kim, both in from Australia, as well Jo’s parents, brother Cheng Poh and sister Sue Ann. As you might imagine, lots of eating involved there. That along with trips to the beach, the shops, a friend’s batik shop/factory, and various other chores around town have kept us pretty busy. We celebrated Pa’s 76th birthday at a large banquet with lots of friends and family. There were so many courses that by the end you are just stuffed and can’t really eat another bite, at least for say…another hour; after all, it is ... read more
