Hi all
We have been missing for a few days - enjoying the glorious sunshine I am pleased to say.
We left KL last Wednesday after a really lovely 4 nights together enjoying some of the many delights the city has to offer. Following a 50 minute flight we arrived at the island of Langkawi - an archipelago made up of 99 islands, known as the jewel of Kedah. Apart from the wonderful scenery you will also appreciate the island is full of culture and heritage.
This is our 8th visit to Langkawi.
Our trip, as usual, to the Datai resort included picturesque landscape with macaques and cattle along the route from the airport. The Datai is an idyllic retreat in the rainforest, with a pristine secluded white beach some metres away, located in the northwest of the island. However many times I have experienced this arrival I don't think I will ever tire of it, nor be amazed by its beauty and surroundings. The champagne reception with a feeling of being reunited with long lost friends, of course, also helps.
The lush rain forests, spectacular wildlife, including macaques (naughty monkeys), dusky monkeys, geckos, hornbills, white
bellied sea eagles, flying squirrels, wild boar, several species of birds and most of all warm, friendly, staff who go above and beyond to make your stay memorable are just some of the reasons we return to this part of South East Asia year after year.
Over the last few days we have become rather like lounge lizards I'm afraid, with our daily exercise merely consisting of hiking up a few steps to and from breakfast, followed by a beach walk, reading and swimming in the sea or one of the two pools available. I try to rebel and get out of this every morning by justifying already completing my full exercise regime for many months to come "as I have already climbed a huge mountain!". However, Becky spurs me on. I'm afraid it doesn't take much though for me to relent and call the concierge for the beach buggy - if only a few hundred yards. Best to conserve energy in this heat I say!
Saturday, we decided to take a boat trip on the Catamaran, "Gone surfin", sailing from Datai Bay across to the Thai islands. This was a six hour round trip with our hosts,
Tod from New Zealand and Rathie from Thailand. They made us feel extremely welcome on board with drinks free flowing and sunshine with breeze on tap. Along the way we were lucky enough to spot lots of wildlife including hump-backed porpoise, sea otters, blue boned fish (flying fish), brown kites and white bellied sea eagles swooping in for their prey. A really wonderful trip with a top up of the tan in with the price.
With more cocktails on the horizon for this evening we will relax in the comforts of the beach bar, surrounded by only the noises of the jungle, including geckos, frogs and cicadas screeching at top note.
What a life!
Sadly, I'm aware that my six week trip is coming to its end. I will really miss Malaysia and the truly wonderful experiences I have had. It will be strange to go back to the routine of home and the decisions that lie ahead. I have come to appreciate even more though how lucky I and others around me are and will learn to embrace the simple things in life even more than before.
