First view..
The Petronas Towers at 6:45am., awesome sight Day 103
After getting back to Kota Bhuru for the night we were up early for our 7:30 bus to KL. It was to be about an 8 hour journey and the bus looked top notch so we would be travelling in style! We saw some incredible scenery on this leg as we wound through the hills and mountains as we crossed to the West coast.
The other option is to take the famous Jungle Train where the scenery even more spectacular, unfortunately this train was not so covenient for us at least, but definitley worth looking into if you are up this way.
Arrived late afternoon around 5pm and headed to our B&B. The train system in Malaysia is pretty high tech as well as being simple which seems to be the norm in all major Asian cities we visited. We stayed at Irsia's B&B which was dirt cheap and very convenient, just across the road from the Times Square mall (awesome) and literally next door to half a dozen Indian/Malaysian and Chinese restaurants. Definitely gets my vote except beware the rooms at Irsia's have no windows which means the doors have a gap which in turn means
Queing, barely awake.
In the queue for some 2 hours. do not expect to get much sleep as you can hear EVERYTHING...pity apart from that a great place to stay.
Day 104 - 105
For the next few days we checked out the sights of KL. It’s not a huge city or should I say the centre is well defined and easy to get around by foot. (Compared to somewhere like Bangkok which is just plain difficult as you need taxi's to get anywhere and can takes an age!)
Basically KL is split up into about 3 parts; you have Chinatown, Little India and the main centre (twin towers etc). We started with Chinatown which is made up of many markets (yep more markets!) and side streets, alleys and Chinese shops. Great foods around, especially from the street stalls l fully recommend the flame grilled chicken satay!!
On the way back we tried the Indian restaurant and it was pretty darn good. The Indian style bread roti canai is amazingly good, it is also known as 'Flying bread' as it is tossed and turned high in the air when being made which makes it very fluffy and delicious. Also this is really cheap and we pretty had
this as part of every meal.
The following morning we decided to have a go at getting up the PETRONAS Towers. They were the world's tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004, when their height was surpassed by Taipei, bit still these are pretty impressive. Check out the pictures.
Now the towers are 88 floors high and the Skybridge which connects the two towers is around the 41-42nd floors. You can visit the Skybridge and can you believe it, it is FREE!!
So you gotta do it, only catch is they only let some 1500 people up a day which meant getting up at the crack of dawn and arriving there around 06:45 to ensure we got a ticket. We then queued for a good 2 hours and we got assigned a timeslot of 9:15. So not to bad and then they only let 20 people up there at a time so that makes it all the more better. Not crowded and great for taking pictures etc, unfortunately the downside is you have about 9 minutes up there I reckon. It was supposed to be about 15 but the time it took going up and down meant we were
short on time there.
Well worth it though, and a must do when you in KL.
Apart from that there isn't much else to see in KL, it has some amazing malls and Chinatown is pretty good food wise, but not a lot else. That doesn't mean we didn't like it because definitely we loved it, it has a great vibe and the locals we met were very friendly. Just do not expect much to see sights wise but fab for shopping and eating! Also there is a quite a bit to do out of town which would be worth looking into if you are here for more than a few days.
Next we were off to Aussie, Perth to be exact. Looking forward to a change of temperature and culture, just 2 more to NZ!!!
