As the clouds parted way, I caught sight of one of the most breathtaking views of the Langkawi Islands. An intricate weave of greens and blues building my hopes of an exciting honeymoon. Our guide was waiting at the airport and quickly made us feel at home as he explained that most people on the island are Indians settled generations ago. I kept drinking into every frame that my mind captured down the road. We were put up at Berjaya Spa & Resort - quite far from the town center. I was extremely apprehensive seeing the shuttle with animals painted and looking all picnicy. The resort turned out to be our dream in reality - our chalet opened into the sea and the constant sound of the waves was sheer delight. The room was way beyond what we had expected to find in this small island. Our menu card surprisingly had veg food and room service was very fast. The evening was spent exploring the resort and the the restaurants - one by the beach, a 24hrs coffee shop that serves buffet and a chinese restaurant. the food here was really tasty and though vegetarian we had a host of items
to pick from.
Day 2 started off with the guided tour to bathik factory ( langkawi is well known for bathik). The colorful combinations - sea blue 7 yellow, brown & cream , sushi & deep purple, in ramdon prints , most of it silk looked very attractive. Skirts, tops, tunics, hats, purses, lamps- name it and its there in bathik. The process in it self is very intricate and the paintings leave you stunned by it sheer beauty. Next we headed to the fish farm. The fish here was fun - especially the archer fish, that jumped up each time to pluck the bread off the finger in seconds. There was this wierd crab that felt funny on the palm that the caretaker kept calling the massage crab. We headed off by boat to watch the eagles eat. The boat was stopped in a secluded part of the water and the boatman throw pieces of meat. Instantly eagles from nowhere flew in and feasted on the meat. In one swift motion the eagles picked their pieces and flew back to their home. It was a very different sight to be observing but yes, Langkawi obtained its name from the
eagle- no wonder then the importance given to the bird. We spotted a couple of vipers and then quickly went to the bat caves. Now these caves have fruit bats that are harmless. Flash photography not permitted inside. Initially we climbed into the wrong caves but later managed to find the right one and check out the rocks with bats all over the ceiling. Our half a day Magrove tour concluded with the eagle square that was the island's landmark. We were dropped off at one of the malls to shop as much as we could. There are may tours to pick from - the island hopping tour, the magrove tour, the sunset cruise ( really wanted to go for this one but couldnt since the weather was not conducive). You also have the resort organizing under water adverture, jet ski ( that one as good- started to rain as well) and tickets to the cable car.
Our day 3 was just the jet ski and the cable car from which we couldnt see much since it was foggy all over and the view wasnt all that great. I wanted to end my trip with a good massage but the
spa was over booked and we had to check out the morning. It was on the way back that the driver was telling us - shopping is the best the in Langkawi- all duty free - best place airport, cosmetics, cigarettes, liquor, bags and chocolates are what Langkawi is known for. There is just one traffic signal in the entire island and just 250 policemen - crime is never a problem here. I shopped all over again at the airport but it was every bit worth it. I guess there could have been a lot more that we could have seen but then the purpose was for honeymooning and the hotel's private beach was too irresistable to be forgetting about.
Will go back to Langkawi someday - just to re live those lovely romantic moments.. 😊
