Saturday, 27th September 2014 After our gathering at NUS in the morning, it was time for me to make my way to Johor Bahru for the rest of the weekend. H would only arrive at the hotel around seven plus in the evening. So I did the check-in on his behalf while taking a quick rest at the url=http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowUserReviews-g298278-d3359745-r231310824-AmanSari_Hotel_City_Centre-Johor_Bahru_Johor_Bahru_District_Johor.htmlAmanSari Hotel. Located directly behind the newly opened Komtar JBCC, the hotel was an easy walk from the customs complex. Our room at the top level 17 came with a good view of the city's skyline. While this was just a basic, no-frills hotel, it had most of the things that ensured a comfortable stay - strong WIFI connection, cable TV, nice air-conditioning and clean bathroom. Sunday, 28th September 2014 Day # Two of our staycation. We decided to skip the breakfast option at the hotel altogether and headed straight to the Faculty of Caffeine about 7 minutes from where we stayed. A number of indie cafes had sprouted up in the Johor Bahru capital recently and Faculty of Caffeine is just one of the many cafes located near the customs complex. The café is really easy to access from JB City Square since it is just one street away from the mall. Occupying on one of the old shop houses along Jalan Trus, this rustic café was not huge but it had a laidback and cosy appeal. The décor was quintessentially industrial with the floors finished off with cement and sand screed. When we arrived on that Sunday morning, the café ... read more

So after our couple days in Singapore (we felt like we were in New York pretty much) it was time to really start exploring Asia. Next stop Johor Bahru - just across the border in Malaysia. After exploring many options as to how to get there we settled on a bus. We read that taxis are pretty popular too, but it sounded expensive. When we travel I always look for the cheapest, best option available. That allows us to spend money on other things. So we were up early and off to the bus station. The locals helped us and soon we were on the bus after paying our $3 fare, packed in with the rest with 2 big bags and many other side bags. Some of the locals were not happy with our arrangement. Saturday, 21st June 2014 I was back to the town of Kluang for my 3rd time on the 3rd weekend of June 2014. Other than the horrible jam along the Singapore side of the customs, the rest of our 90 minutes journey was relatively smooth. We checked-in at url=http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowUserReviews-g608514-d1217972-r211614543-Hotel_Anika-Kluang_Kluang_District_Joho.htmlHotel Anika located at the heart of the town centre for our weekend stay. After a delicious lunch at the iconic Star Coffee House and Restaurant, we were soon off to the UK Farm about 30 minutes ride from town. As part of our visit, there were opportunities to feed the goats and ostriches as well as have a peep at an Orang Asli Settlement. The beautiful sunset against the backdrop of the expansive countryside was quite a sight to end our lovely day. Dinner at url=https://www.facebook.com... read more

Saturday, 24th May 2014 This was a last minute decision to stay over for the weekend at Bukit Indah, Johor Malaysia. Given the relatively long commute via public transportation from Singapore, it made logical sense to stay over without the mad rush for home on Saturday evening. A couple of hotels had sprouted around the neighbourhood recently and for the purpose of this weekend stay, I made a go at the Princeton Hotel. The hotel was roughly 10 minutes walk to Jusco and along the same stretch where the massive Kaki Kaki Reflexology was located. There was nothing to shout about in terms of amenities at url=http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowUserReviews-g298278-d3706555-r206945566-Princeton_Hotel-Johor_Bahru_Johor_Bahru_District_Joho.htmlPrinceton but it made up by having a rather comfortable room that came... read more

Geo: 1.5059, 103.382I had decided to cross the Woodlands Bridge from Singapore straight into Johor Bahru and although I wouldn't stay here it was nice to cycle through and be back in Malaysia. It took a couple of days for me to cycle back up to Melaka as I had planned to stop in coastal places on route. The journey takes me though lovely scenery, beaches, farming areas and plantations, many Mosques and traditional Malay villages, fishing ports and I even met a couple of cyclist heading to Singapore on route. I had decided to camp on the way and I was fortunate to stay with a local family the first night who let me put my tent up under their garage area at their home, and gave me access to their toilet and wash room ... read more

Geo: 1.3532, 104.224The road from Mersing to Singapore was interesting to say the least... sh*t I know how to scare myself!!! I'll keep this blog brief but for me it was one of the most fascinating, interesting and scary journey's that I've had. It started off well with a plan to sick to the coast route of south east Malaysia as much as possible but like everything I do on a whim, it proved extremely challenging. It started off well and I managed to find my route out of Mersing towards Kota Tinggi which was pretty much on the main route, but although a fast road I didn't have any dramas. After 50km or so I managed to find the coastal route I was looking for although I then proceeded to get lost a couple of times ... read more

Geo: 2.0251, 103.333The road over to Mersing was fab... I love getting back on the bike, I mean 'every time' that I get back on it, this feeling tells me that this is what I should be doing and to stop hanging around places for too long, new years resolution 'must do better'...ha ha you'd never guess I watched Bridget Jones last night (again)! From Melaka I only cycled as far as Muar before checking into a cheap hotel, although I really didn't feel well and ended up in my bed for a few days, and only managed a little exploring around. It's very like Penang and Malaka with the archways and style of houses and has a high Chinese population which is reflected in the style. It has many local fishing boats and each wee ... read more

Not a very appealing breakfast and a stinky wait (not sure if durian or sewer) for our maxi taxi to the bus terminal which is around 5km out of town (MYR20). There are plenty of buses from Johor Bahru to Malacca many not leaving till 10.30. As we hadn't booked and were there at 8.30 Wayne hastily chose tickets from a gentleman calling "Melakamelakamelakamelakamelaka" for MYR21 each (I think tickets are generally between 17 and 20). If you disregard the fact that we had to walk out to the road to get on the bus that was hardly "new" as described by Melakaman, the breakdown, the busdriver's regular mobile phone conversations and off key singing and the drop off near to rather than in the Malacca bus terminal it was a fine trip. Saturday, 21st December 2013 My day trip to Johor Bahru took on a different route this weekend as I made use of the Second Link to reach the other side of the Causeway. My SGD4 commute to Bukit Indah took a fair bit of time having first boarded the CW3 bus at Jurong East before transferring to the CW6 service after the CIQ Customs. Along the way, my bus passed through the LEGOLAND Theme Park and the posh Horizon Hills estate before making a stop at the Aeon Bukit Indah Shopping Centre. This was a different side of Johor Bahru that I wasn't familiar with. The township itself was well planned with many shophouses centred around a well-maintained public park. Hotel Granada looked imposing from a distance and given its ideal location to amenities, I should ... read more
